CharlottiesPiggies

got a 20kg bale of horse shavings, and an ordinary sized horse bale of straw for £9.38 from the local feed place

FANTASTIC VALUE...... ;D if anyone wants me to get them some, let me know ;)

Sounds fab, just thought I would say though, guineas should be on hay. Straw can hurt their eyes.

god sorry, iv had some much stuff BUZZING round my head

yeh to correct myself....i got HAY and shavings ::)

Peter always calls Hay Straw! ::) I have to correct him.

I didnt realise shavings were safe for guinea pigs? I thought they werent safe for any small animal?
I have rats, mice etc so dont use it for them and assumed it was the same for piggies...

Each to their own O0 Ive always used it :)

Oh right, its just in the rat fancy and also most small animals people ar very against it because it causes bad respiratory infections etc. Doesnt it effect piggies then? I'm not gonna start usoing it, hate the stuff. Just a bit concerned.

Some say it does but mine havent and ive been using it for years O0 Most people avoid it now though cause of those rumors :P But i guess theres soo many stuff you can use now it is better to be safe than sorry but until it effects mine then i wont change :)

Ah right, I guess guinea pigs respiratory systems are different to rats and mice then, I know its 100% definitely not for use with rats!

Yep Debs shavings can cause URI's in Guinea Pigs too.
Reason i'm changing to fleece.

There are certain types of horse bedding eg easibed which is not wood shavings as such. Possibly Merry and Rosie means this stuff?

David always calls hay straw too and nearly came home with 8 bags of it, luckily he phoned me to check! 98)

My dad once got me a bale of straw. I felt bad cos I had said a lot of times hay.
I used the straw for my bunny though...

the stuff i got was just plain woodshavings for horses, with the dust extracted from them. O0

I'm sorry it really looks like I'm causing trouble here, and I'm not intending to.
But surely if its woodshavings, they'll be dusty no matter what? I used to use 'dust extracted ones' when I had hamsters, before I knew better. And they still made me cough and sneeze!

ye i know what you mean, iv been working with horses for 12 years and dust extracted are still dusty, but not as much. i will keep an eye though

I find shavings very drying on my hands. With you being in the Horse world it should be no problem for you to source out some megazorb to use instead of shavings. :)

Megazorb is an alternative bedding. You get it from horse feed shops or farm shops. It is dried wood pulp and is safe for guinea pigs. Isn't all that dusty and is only £5 for a 3ft bag. :)

megazorb is great, i always say so. its so absorbant, and you only need a thin layer, and a sack lasts a while O0
