and no single female guinea pigs available only pairs. Have to say am a little deflated. I currently have two lone sow piggies living alone...who wont get on and wanted to get them a cage mates each.
I dont know what to do...wait and call up again in a month or two or so? or B) Try and find another rescue close by the dose sow dating?.. i don't drive so rely on lifts and public transport. I'm feeling so down...i know its silly..but i hate that Honor and Haven live alone...although they seem fine atm etc...i just feel guilty.
Sugestions appriciated..anyway i just wanted to updated you guys...you have been great.
Anyway..enough from me

From me Jenny, and my beautiful girls Honor and Haven.

Most piggies that end up in rescue are boars; sows can sometimes be hard to come by - I have been there myself with a bereaved girl. Have you thought about neutered boars as an alternative option?

i would happily have neutered boars for each girl.. do you think its worth me calling and asking if they have any? I just assumed they didn't have any as when i called explaining the situation saying i want a friend each for my two single sow piggies...they just said sorry we only have paired females at the moment. I looked on the piggiebank map and the next nearest rescue seems to be an hour and 20 mins from me....and as my mum has a bad leg i dont think she would be able to drive me that far :S

I gave them a call but she was out and her husband answered so i said i would call back tomorrow as she is the one who deals with the rescue etc...probs a long shot but have to try :) Wish the rspca did bonding like they used too...i had 2 rabbits bonded at my local rspca years ago and they did a fab job...but a few years ago i contacted them and they no longer did the bonding...its a shame *** its a service i would happily have paid for etc. Still never mind. Going to go and cuddle my piggies and ponder my options . x

Here is a list of the Piggy Bank recommended rescues that may be of use to you if you haven't seen it :

There are probably lots of boars who would love a wifepig so worth ringing around and you get support from the rescue for life :)

Thanks Guinea Pig Slave... i have looked but nothing near me except "wheek and squeek" who is the rescue i tried tody. I cant really travel more than 45mins away at a time as my mother has a bad knee and struggles to drive more than 45mins at a time really..

Hi Jenny
I'm one of Anna's supporters at the Wheek and Squeak and I'm sure she'll be able to help. She's got lots of pigs waiting for homes so don't give up hope.
She's a very good match maker!
Kate

Thanks Katiepops.. i am going to try Wheek and Squeak again in the morning about the neutered boar option as she has no lone boars instead. :) If not I'm sure somthing will come up...just want my girls to be happy :D

It's a pity you're so far away. My local rescue has just taken in over 50 sows (on pregnant watch) & 4 young boars getting neutered next week. Apparently their owner thought she had got 3 sows but one was a boar & pregnancies occurred. The were separated & the boars managed to get in with the sows & several months later there were over 70 piggies. One rescue had already taken & re-homed 20 of them before Bunny Burrows was called in to assist. I'm fostering the 4 boars, you can see their pigtures at http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/showthread.php?106338-I-m-Doing-My-First-Fostering

Gosh good luck with the fostering and hope the rescue finds homes for them all soon. Yep it is such a pitty about being so far away...i am right down south in Portsmouth. Very cute piggies. x

Just got off the phone to wheek and squeak and asked about neutered boars and they currently have none for adoption....but she said in early September she will be getting 1 or 2 boars she cant pair up neutered so if this is the case once they are neutered and gone through the appropriate waiting period then she will give me a call to arrange popping up etc. So anyway i have left my name and number and she said she will let me know if any piggies come in or if she has any boars neutered etc. She says its usually boars that come into the rescue as some of you have stated. So yep am feeling more positive today. So hopefully with any luck in the next few months my girls may have a friend each... :)

Shame you're so far away :-( the rescue centre I got my neutered boar from has three neutered boars ready to go to new homes and they can bond there for you - they're in Essex xx

Yep is a shame, hopefully my local rescue will have some neutered boars soon or a few single females soon. :) Fingers crossed

Cross gender bondings are generally the most stable of them all, once initial acceptance at the rescue has happened, so it will be worth the wait! Best start any rescue bonding trip with dating your iffiest sow, as she will be the most difficult to pair up - preferably with a rather laid back submissive boar, but you can never tell!

For neutering, you need an experienced vet with a good track record; otherwise you can end up easily with very costly to fatal post-op neutering complications. Between that and character compatibility in the bond, we don't recommend going for boars on your own.

Thanks for the advice...Yep both girls are quite strong and independent...but i defiantly think will try Honor first as she was a dominant female in her old group there for probably the most difficult to pair...where as Haven is a little more laid back. Have never had a boar before...i know this is a silly question probs but is keeping 2 neutered boars in the same room going to cause problems? ...as i have 2 ferplast 120 cages atm where the girls live...one on top of the other?

Tends to be only a problem if they're in the same cage with females around.

I have two neutered brothers living next to six girls (solid wooden partition between pens) and have never had an issue :) The girls often have their own orgies and seasonal hormones fly but the boys are sooo laid back, they'd fall over if they didn't have four feet :)
My two intact boys live next door to three girls and a neutered boy...again, solid partition and no problems.
I always clean the boys out first before the girls so there's no trace of smell on my hands etc. keep their bedding separate. Good hand washing and caution should be implemented for harmony to continue :)

I have currently four "husboars" living next to each other with their respective "sowves" in the living room (including a temporary mixed gender foster couple for TEAS sanctuary). My Tribe and Troop have adjoining pens and no problems whatsoever. They may wind each other up a bit at first, but that settles down fairly quickly and then they just ignore each other. There is also no problem with having them on the lawn in adjoining runs.

Thats great thanks everyone :D Am getting extremely excited now haha...always exciting the thought of possibly getting some new piggies...just have to sit and wait for the phone call. :)

nope not yet :( if no news in a few weeks will call up again. I am on a waiting list... so hopefully not long.. :)

To add dose anyone know of any other good rescues within an hour and a half away from Portsmouth? I have a feeling i may have to go further afield .. just as i will probs be traveling via train and then bus it may end up being a long trek.. Thanks in advance... As oi say will call wheek and squeak again in a few weeks... but if this fails i would like a fall back...:) thanks
