My dear `Wendy` - 15 months old has just gone blind in her right eye. I`ve just noticed the condition and its Saturday night.

She`s eating but I`m sure she is in pain b`cos the eye is wincing and the eye lids are red. The cornea has a bubbling on the surface and its not water.

Wendy has pink eyes and her fur is mostly white - she`s an albino. Her sisters arn`t and have coloured fur and black eyes. Wendy was the runt whom I saved at birth b`cos she was so small and outcast by her mum.

Has anyone had any experience of this and is there anything I can do until the morning?

Please say this little prayer for my dear Wendy girl.

`This prayer is for Wendy girl,
A sweety piggy who is in pain.
Please give her a restful and painfree night,
Until she is seen by a piggy carer`.

Thank you all for your kind support and prayers earlier this week for my dearest Holly who has made a great recovery. My piggies are having a hard time at the moment.

Has the eye gone white? Can you see anything in it? The eye can go opaque if it gets injured by some hay.

Optrex infected eyes (chloramphenical) can be used, although when you buy it from the pharmacy please don't say it is for using on a guinea pig. They won't sell you anything for use on an animal.

Hopefully the eye drops will sort the problem out quickly, although you need to make sure there isn't anthing caught in the eye.

Thanx for your very quick reply.

Its whitish and its bubbly. I`ll look again to see if it has anything in it.

Anders.

Vedra of CCT has asked me to bring her straight to her surgery. I`m off now. Will post a reply when i gt back.

There could be an ulcer on the eye. I would definitely get some of of the drops tomorrow if you aren't going to be able to get Wendy seen by a vet until Monday. Try not to worry, it should improve very quickly once treatment has been started.

Can't help with diagnosis, but just wanted to say if the pharmacy doesn't carry the Optrex above then Golden Eye is effectively the same stuff. I sometimes end up using the Tesco pharmacy in the local store as it's open till 10pm, and trying to ask for something by active ingredient can be.. Tricky...

Just back home at 2 a.m. Sunday morning.

Wendy is in good hands overnight with Vedra. Initial examination didn`t show a seed under the eyelid. Vedra said Wendy might have been accidentally scratched on the cornea by a sibbling in a scurry. There are 7 sisters and a mum (8 altogether).

They have a very large area in the shed connected to 2 runs but they do a lot of pushing and shoving for food.

I await a proper prognosis in the morning. The eye looks real bad and I personnaly feel Wendy has lost any real focus in this eye.

I`m so lucky to have CCT only an hours drive away.

Anders :(

Glad she's in good hands, I'm sure she'll get sorted out. They also cope very well with only one eye, I've got a sow here Kiki who was born with one working eye and one deflated eye, doesn't cause her any problems although you obviously need to be careful to approach them from the side with the working eye so as not to alarm them. Anyway, she might not lose her sight - eyes often look worse than they are!

Bless you for driving her an hour to Vedra in the middle of the night! I was also thinking along the lines of a corneal ulcer, I hope Vedra is able to save/treat the eye whatever the case.

Stinklepig, thanks for the info on Golden Eye drops, it's useful to know.

The latest info from Vedra is that Wendy suffered a cut to her eye either by a claw or tooth. She is the runt and small. Perhaps she`s being bullied though I`ve never noticed it. Some teeth nip marks were found on Wendy by Vedra which really surprised me.

The fluid (vetrious humour) from the eye has drained out and its not looking good for her eye. If it heals some slight light sensation may be possible if the eye recovers without infection etc.

She still has focus in her left eye thank goodness.

When Wendy comes back home I`ll remove her from her sisters / mum and team her up with her bonded sister `Silly Lilly`.

Sorry to hear she's gone blind but dont worry she can still lead a fairly normal life. My dad had a lovely girl called Cassandra (his Only Fools and Horses Stage) and she lost her eye at a young age. Just make sure she knows when you are approaching her by talking quietly and by walking towards her sighted side first. Cass used to jump a mile if she hadn't realised you were there bless her. Keep us updated on her progress.

I'm so sorry that she's lost her eye!

Thankfully, it's not as bad as they can compensate with their whiskers and hearing.
She will be depressed for a time until she gets used to it. Make sure, you don't handle her from her blind side! She'll hate that and might nip at you.

I've had gps with (congenital) cataracts twice and they were fine once they got their bearing - even jumping on top of their hut!

One of my piggies damaged her eye so badly that it needed to be removed. When she came home a few hours after surgery she was absolutely fine. She adapted to only having the one eye immediately and she is still the same feisty little character she was before.

Will Wendy need to have her eye removed if it doesn't improve or will she just have no sight?

Thanx for all your adice.

To date, Wendy is still at CCT and on a pain suppresant (cavy suitable) drug. I`m expecting news tomorrow - Monday. The main thing now is to ensure no bacteria gets inside.

Shes a lovely piggy who squarks the house down when picked up. She`s so timid but so so adorable.

Anders :))

Pan (short for Panoramic) had a chunk taken out his face at birth. He had lost some skin in the area, and his eyeball was punctured.

He's currently munching on Selective and wondering when I'm going to bed so he can have veggies (the boys live in my bedroom). He's got some use of the "half" eye and aside from looking a bit odd the skin etc is fine. No issues with blocked ducts and he can even "make soap" out of it.

An eye injury isn't trivial by any means, but at the worst she may have to have the eye removed, and might get an infection that should be reasonably easily treat. Most likely is she'll be a bit tender for a while and *may* lose the sight in that eye if she's unlucky.

My sow poked her eye with some hay and developed a very bad corneal ulcer. There was a chance that she may have lost her eye but a combination of tiacil eye drops for 2 weeks and then chloromycetyn eye drops for a further 3-4 weeks and the ulcer healed and the eye went back to normal. Hope this helps and Wendy's eye heals :)

Thank you all for your kind thoughts and good vibs for my dear Wendy. She is now back home after being cared for by Vedra at CCT.

She has severedly impaired vision with only light / dark very blurry vision in her right eye. The left eye is OK - thank goodness. I`ve put her with her `best friend` sister in a cosey part of the shed with a view.

I was reluctant to do this but she was still being `picked` on by some of her sisters. Being blind on her right side means she can`t run away from trouble so quickly.

Thank you all for your support.
