Well where do I start? My sister phoned me this morning and said " I have found you a guinea pig" she went on to say that a friend of hers has a female that she felt was not getting the attention it needed and wanted to rehome it.I explained that I was going to get one from a rescue and did not feel I could take it, "OK don't worry I will have it " she replied.I think if I am been honest this is where I started to weaken, my sister is lovely but should not keep animals she has not got a good attitude towards them this was proved when I tried to put her off by telling her all about what it would need and how she would have to get it a friend and she said "its a flipping guinea pig !" So I agreed to go with her thinking I could put the lady in touch with a rescue. I was shocked when we got there how young'sock' was the lady said she had only had her three weeks and although she liked her felt it was a mistake . she seemed well looked after and I was determined not to have her but she is now upstairs in quarantine in my bedroom! She is lovely but I have a few worries she was from pets at home. What if she is pregnant? What if Edward hates her or she hates Edward? What if she has ringworm? I am a bit mad with myself as it was my birthday a while ago and I was worried sick my husband would walk in with a random guinea and that's exactly what I have done !

Well done on taking her in. Weigh her weekly, this will give you an idea on if she is pregnant. I think pregnancy watch is around 11 weeks @Wiebke would confirm this as I am sure a few of our experienced posters. Keep the quarantine period up and give her a good check over for any dandruff etc... Hopefully all will be okay and you can look forward to bonding this little one in.
Is she a baby?

Yes she is still a baby she brought her at eight weeks she said so she is only about eleven weeks I have had a quick look at her and can't see any dandruff and I have looked at her bits and think she is a girl but will have her checked by some one with more experience. I will also weigh her as you suggest.I am still in shock that I have her lol

You have taken in a piggy in need and that's a good thing. Make sure you quarantine her away from your boy for a few weeks if you can.

Take a deep breath! Better that the little girl is in good hands!

At that young age, Edward and she are pretty bound to get on! He will be delighted! She must be about 3 months old but has not been with another piggy since she left the shop?

You are doing the right thing to put her through a 2 week quarantine, but it is more likely just a precaution. If she had picked something up in the shop, it would show by now as it is three weeks past; ringworm has an incubation peirod of 10-14 days. Please have her MOTed by your vet, to be on the safe side.
It is a bit early to tell re. pregnancy, but it is generally just a minority of shop sows that end up pregnant. Thankfully, the vast majority of teenage mums have a problem-free pregnancy and birth and healthy babies. You will just have to sit it out, but I wouldn't worry overly much. Please read the pregnancy information at the top of that section so you know what you have to look out for. With a good general diet you are giving her the best prep; just limit the pellets to no more than 40g a day for her.
With three weeks gone, you should have a good idea whether or not within about a month or so, and then is the time to make any plans if that really becomes necessary - odds are clearly in favour for not. A first time pregnancy is about 10 weeks; your girl is at least 3 weeks through it. Most newbies will see signs from about week 6-7. ;)
On those grounds, you can still introduce her to other piggies and let her live a normal life. She will love the companionship as she is still just a baby herself!

Ignore me, I didn't see that you had already quarantined.

Thank you for your replies that's why I love this forum the support is great. No she has not lived with another guinea since leaving the shop in fact the woman said she was a lone in pets at home as the others had been sold. She must be lonely as I put her a teddy in her house and when I peeked in tonight she was layer cuddled up to it.

It sounds like fate to me too. Any chance of photos?

I've just read your post. Well, it may not have been the way you intended to get a companion for Edward - but you have helped out a little guinea pig in need. I hope they both get on when Edward is safe and you can start introducing.

Yes Edward is neutered but still waiting his 'safe time' Its funny but i didn't want a young guinea pig for Edward as I thought he would squash it lol

Sounds like it was meant to be! When is Edward safe? Boars are generally actually very kind with youngsters and babies, and they will not squash them!

SouI dI like fate to me :)
Hope your right. Do people think its alful if i change her. name as i do not like the name 'sock' (sorry to any socks out there ) I am going to give her the name l planned for Edwards wife so she is now Mrs Simpson

I don't see a problem in changing her name. The only reason I've kept the names the rescue Centres gave Max, Bess and Sparkle is because I like them.

[piggyfan, post: 1527029, member: 11572"]Aww poor thing being kept on her own then unwanted. I would change her name too. A new name for a new happy life.[/QUOTE]
Oh thats sweet thank you

Well done on offering this girl a better life. As she's your piggie you can call her what you like. She won't mind, honest ;). I'm sure she will grow into her name of Mrs Simpson x

I would keep them side by side once Mrs Simpson has finished her quarantine so they can get to know each other through the bars. That will make the intros a lot more smoother! :)
Yes i will do that thank you

It was meant to be. I was supposed to get two swiss sows but due to rescue having to quarantine them because of uri case by the time i could have took them too big for pebbles to accept them (she will only accept babies)Took on two 4 week olds that had lost their mother and they worked out brilliant, pebbles mothers them.

I always think that you don't have to get them from a Rescue Centre to have "rescued" them. I think that the ones in the rescue centre you may have gone to are being well cared for until they get their forever home. This little one was destined for a life of goodness knows what if you hadn't been there to take her.

Piglet was called Domino when he lived with my sister - he came to me for exactly the same reason as your original post! - they still call him that when talk about him or ask about him. I wasn't so keen on it so he became Piglet (or Pig).

I hope all goes well for the 2nd Edward and Mrs Simpson! xx

The last five dogs i got were rescues but never saw a rescue centre, got them straight from crap owners. If the boys i got from a bad situation had been sows they would have stayed with me but not technically rescues. The first two piggies i got were rehomed through a pet shop but loads in a small cage for a fiver each so still rescues.Fingers crossed for your new couple and i would have done exactly the same
