Hi,

If you've been following my previous posts, you'll understand that I've been having trouble with my 3 girls. They've been to a vet numerous times (to an unsavvy one, D'OH) .. For them to tell me there is nothing wrong with them, when in fact I knew there was.

So today we took them to see Molly Varga (one of the best exotic vets in the country) .. With the same symptoms - squeaking when toileting, breathing heavier, not being active and squinting.

She listened to their chest, looked at their teeth which were all fine - However, Pringles has a cystic ovary which Molly actually showed us through her skin.. Porche squeaked when she felt around her bladder and obviously Pebbles has been passing blood, so all 3 girls have stayed for xrays and ultrasounds. We will get a phonecall later which I will be sure to update you on.

I am really hoping surgery or spaying isn't needed. Please send vibes to my babies :(

Oh my goodness, this is really strange. I really hope your girls are back wheeking and popcorning again soon. I really feel for you xx

Thank you so much. Yeah it is very strange, I'm so confused and can't help but feel like it's my fault :(. Our rabbit has just had a dental too, so you can only imagine how much we are forking out at the moment! I am really hoping a spay isn't needed, or any surgery for that matter.

Poor girlies :( x

Hope all goes well. For Ovarian cysts spaying is not the only treatment... They can have hormone injections to try and shrink them first. Your girls are in the hands of a highly recommended piggie vet. Let us know how they get on.

Thank you, I'm hoping an alternative treatment can be given first. I feel much better knowing they are now in good, knowledgeable hands. Just a waiting game now, can't wait to just go and pick them up! I knew these things were common in older sows, but I never expected it to be all 3 - all at once!

My vet also diagnosed polycystic ovaries just from a manual examination (she is a specialist exotics vet from a vet referrals centre where other vets pass their cases to when they get stumped ).In most cases hormone treatment and implants tend to be only a short term solution,so just be guided by your vet and dont be too worried if she recommends a spay - I have had both my two 4yr old sows spayed recently and as Rachael had spayed many guinea pigs (including her own tribe!) - a vet experienced in the proceedure will be able to carry out the proceedure much quicker than a vet with less experience (both my sows also had other tumours in the womb which were sorted out at the same time ).Both girls were spayed in around 15 / 20 mins from start to finish, and up and about eating more or less straight away - what I am saying is dont be too worried if a spay is what your vet recommends - all ops are not without risk, but using an experienced vet like you are minimises the risk - typical cost for a spay all in is about £90 that included the empirid and antibitics afterwards, but your vet will give you a breakdown of charges.Good luck.

Thank you very much everyone.

The girls are home now with potassium citrate to break down any crystals and de-acidify their urine. 0.15ml to be given twice daily!

We also got the xray results - Pringles definitely has a right cystic ovary, Pebbles' uterus was clearly visable in the xray and fortunately, they didn't find any abnormalities with Porche but he is uncomfortable when feeling around the abdomen. Molly doesn't reccomend that I spay unless it's an absolute last resort due to the risks etc.

At the moment we aren't doing anything about the cyst, at least she didn't mention it. We are just seeing how they get on with the potassium citrate and see if that sorts out the problems with Pebbles and Porche - Then obviously we will have to see what we need to do about the cyst.

All in all, it cost £104 today and that's including the medication. If they need to be spayed it would most likely cost £190 or so for both of them - Money we don't have anymore due to the forking out of our bunnies dental aswell! Ahh.. Pets.

My sister is being absolutely awful about it though. She is saying terrible things such as 'put them to sleep and get news ones' , and 'they will die in a few months anyway' etc. It's really sad how people think of piggies as worthless :(

We appreciate all of your vibes xx

Oh gosh, I am so sorry that your piggies have these problems and all at once too :( But at least you know what you're dealing with now.

People can be so nasty can't they? Eliza has ongoing problems with her eye socket and I have been told by some that I should just have her PTS and put out her misery :(

I wish you and your piggies all the best xx

I am sorry for your little ones being poorly. What a disgusting attitude your sister has towards animals. You are a loving owner and it is lucky they have you caring for them.

Glad to know you saw a new vet and on way to hopefully sorting the problems out. Sadly a lot of people think like that, I often get people mentioning me going to the vets with mine but they are my babies and I want the best for them.

Thank you all! Yes it's sad that some people have no respect for animals, especially smaller ones. I love them and would never see them suffer! I appreciate all of your thoughts.

They're producing some squishy poops tonight and Porche's has a bit of white discharge with it.. do you think this may be linked to the stress from today or the meds maybe? X

Sounds like you are moving in the right direction with your girls. Molly is our vet, too and my piggies have had great care from her (and Liz, too).

Sending healing vibes your way, it's horrible when one pet is poorly let alone several all at once :(
I hope this medication works for them and they feel better soon xx

Just caught up on your thread, what a terrible shame for you. Always happens at once! The vet bills I mean, sending healing vibes to your troop.

As for your sister, well wait the only way I find to explain it to people is like, how would you feel I'd your favourite dress that was expensive that they wear often gets a stain on it, you want it cleaned right? The point is we all get attached to things, animals, it's what makes us human not robots devoid of feelings.:rtm:

So until the day she starts to realise, very often when they haven't suffered in the same way, they will slowly learn to understand. Be strong hun x
