Hi i am new to this forum and was wondering if any body has had a similar experience. I have a sheltie sow called Pinkie she has gone through a tough time lately, she started with a wet bottom about two months ago, so we took her to a cavy savy vet, she told us that Pinkie had ovarian cysts, so she was operated on and the cysts were removed. Anyway we thought the problem would go away after this, apparently not, so we had an xray done an the xray showed a stone in her urethra, after a week of trying to coax out the stone by manipulation she ended up back at the vets under anestetic and had the stone removed by force, poor thing. i dont understand why the wet bottom still persists though, she is losing her hair and will start to get sores if i can't resolve this, would anybody have any ideas cos i am at i loss now.:(

Is it wet with wee? Perhaps you could try using vetbed for her, it would soak the wee away from her. Some of my shelties get wet bums, because they sit in their wee. I keep their bottoms trimmed short and give them lots of absorbent bedding.

Hope she's ok

Like Sophie said, I would trim the fur so it doesn't get tangled, etc. I understand that she has a wet bottom but could it be a possiblity that the fur loss is stress/hormonal due to her going through a lot recently? How old is she? My sow had arthritis in her back legs and couldn't stand up when she needed to wee, therefore losing fur and having a wet bum constantly. The vetbed helped. I know some people don't agree but I used vaseline on my sow's fur when it fell out to protect the skin from urine scald and the fur did re-grow in some patches. I hope you find the cause of the problem xx

Pinkie still wet

Hi everyone, thanks for your ideas, thinking of changing my living arrangments with my guineas after christmas, not got a lot of space but i am going to get a c+c set up and some vet bed, wait can't. Using megazorb at the moment it is costing me a fortune but is good. Will have to keep bathing Pinkies bottom so that she does not get sores. Vet said try sudocrem, but this can only be a temporary measure really. She hasn't gone through a second op for stone removal, but she could well be incontinent i suppose, poor girl. She is only three years mind, only middle aged in guinea years. I will keep you posted if there is any change. Sharon.:(

Bubbles, who we lost 3 weeks ago, often had a wet bottom following an operation to remove a lump on her hind quaters when she was 18 months old, the lump was a sack of dark hair filaments rather than anything nasty.

She did drink and wee significantly more after the op so I wondered if she might have been borderline diabetic, other than the high water consumption she was fine, good weight, good coat, very active.

She had dense hair and had a tendency to sit in her own wee so sometimes when picked up she had a wet bottom, we washed her regularily and trimmed her fur around her bottom.

Hope this helps!

Hi and a big welcome from me in OZ :)
oh dam........so sorry to hear about Pinkie i'm hoping by now with all the advice and hopefully some time it has cleared up a bit....healing wheeeeeeks for the precious girl x>>x>>x>>
sooooooo looking forward to chatting to you and hearing all about Pinkie x)

Awww bless her. I agree with the vet bed. Initially it's expensive to buy but it's fantastic :) Mildred has long hair and gets a wet bum sometimes, and like others have said the vet bed ensures that they are not sat in their wee. Hope your little darling is feeling better. I have been looking for some new vet bed for my girlies for a christmas pressie and they do it in pink and lilac now :)

Pinkie

Hi , thanks for all your posts and suggestions, I thought I would update you all on Pinkie's progress, I spoke to the vet that removed her stone, and told her that I still had the same problem with Pinkie's wet bottom and stale wee. She has put her on a course of Baytril and the problem seems to be easing, it hasn't gone completely but i didn't think it would dissapear over night, due to the fact that she had the bladder stone in her urethra for about six to eight weeks before we got a definate diagnosis, thus giving her obsructed flow with her urine, so this inturn gave her an infected bladder. Fingers x for full recovery. I will let you know. Kind regards. Sharon.x>>
