One of our girls seems to constantly have a wet bottom from where she sits in one location for a long period of time its starting to look as is its making her skin quite sore. is there anything we can do to discourage her from staying in one position for a long time and is there anything we can apply to the skin to soothe it?

thanks

What is she sitting on? Fleece? Vetbed? Snowflake ? Hay ? etc. I found my piggies were under the same hidies all the time and despite being on fleece liner, the constant weeing in the same place was not hygienic and was making them wet too. So I started putting puppy pads ontop of the fleece liner in those areas and I then change the pads as often as required - mostly daily. That saves on washing fleeces every day and has worked wonders! The most heavily weed on areas I also put vetbed ontop of the puppy pad, so that the wee soaks in but the top is dry for them walking or sitting on. Again the vetbed needs changing daily.

If she is always in the same place then another thing you try is move things around in the cage and swap in different hidies and toys - firstly it keeps them interested and stimulated to explore again and secondly it will change where she wees.

Also how old is she? has she always stayed in the one spot or did she used to move around more?

One of my piggies does the same. I keep changing bedding. She's always done it. I've got some puppy pads arriving today so I'm going to try them.

Is this a new issue? If so, I would rule out a medical cause first. One of my pigs with bladder issues ends up with a wet bottom when she has a UTI. I think she either dribbles or can't hold it and pees very frequently in those circumstances. She doesn't have a wet bottom otherwise. If you rule out an issue or it's normal behavior for this pig, you may want to look at putting something more absorbent in the areas where she tends to go. I also make sure to wash Sundae's bum off when she has a UTI and ends up wet... a lot of the sore skin might be avoided if you can get the urine out of her fur so it doesn't have prolonged contact with the skin. Hope this helps!

My Bramble does the same, she seems to be half mole and digs right down to the bottom of her shavings under her pigloo so ive had to make sure I'm lifting it at least twice a day to replace shavings, wipe up any wet bits, moving the hide to a new spot etc and giving her a wipe with a damp cloth when she does get wet. It seems to be her lifes mission to make as much mess as possible xD

I have the same problem with Tilly, she has incontinence issues for which she is on lifelong medication.

I found Vetbed with a puppy pad underneath to be the best for her as it draws the wet through the fleece into the layer below.

I use Bepanthen for any redness of the skin.
