Hello Piggy lovers,

Just a little concerned about my gorgeous lady pig Pearl.

I noticed today that her bottom was wet and very smelly. I gave her a wash and checked on her again after she was fully dry and it was back again. It's mainly on her back legs. There doesn't appear to be any sores or broken skin so I am guessing it may be a urine infection?

If this is the case then is it easy to treat with antibiotics? Could it be a sign of anything else as she is normally VERY active and vocal haha but now she is all quiet and looking very sorry for herself :(

Also my other two girlie pigs seem to be very interested and protective of her?

Any help would be much appreciated as I'm very worried about her. x x

It could be a water infection by your description of the symptoms, but I also had a sow that had a small stone in her urethra and had these symptoms too. Get a vet to check her over and if antibiotics don't cure the problem, then an Xray may be needed to see if there is anything there that could be causing the problem to persist.

Thank you for your kind reply.
I was really hoping that it might be a urine infection that poor Pearl could fight but the vet thinks its a pretty nasty infection that she won't get over.

Over the last two days Pearl has got worse. I'm giving her the antibiotics and she is drinking but not eating or passing and piggy poops or wee. When she tries to pass anything she cries and nothing comes out and there is blood.

It's killing me to watch her like this. I'm still praying she will recover but can piggies come through this type of illness?

I'm so sad I just dont know what to do with myself 8...

Any suggestions or similar experiences?

Thank you x x

Oh no :( The only thing I can think of right now is to try and stimulate her appetite you could try syringing her some critical care.. or pour hot water on some pellet food so it's a mush then once cooled syring that. Also are you giving her a pro biotic? Might help her tummy which could also be upset by the antibiotics. Other than that just keep her comfy? :( is she on pain killers?

I'm sorry to hear pearl isn't well, how long since she last pooped? She really needs to keep pooping otherwise a pig can go into gut stasis which is hard to recover from. As mentioned she could do with being syringe fed if she's not taking in any food, guinea pigs rely on their guts to keep moving. If I were you I would ring your vet for some advise, if they're closed there will be a number on the answer phone for an emergency vet, you could call them and get some advise on how to syringe feed your girl and how much and how often, I'm not an expert on that or the quantities I just know it's important to keep their guts moving. If you haven't got any critical care, take a bowl of good quality pellets, pour on boiling water, mush up and leave to cool.
Good Luck with Pearl :)

This sounds very serious, is your vet aware that she has stopped eating and is not passing any poos or wee. Did your vet xray her to see if it was a stone at all, as this could prevent her from passing wee if she has a blockage. She needs help urgently, as she will deteriorate very quickly.

Thank you for all your replies.

I am sorry to say that Pearl had to be put to sleep.
After I wrote my last post I quickly took her to the vets as I knew her symptoms were very serious and deep down I knew what would happen.

At first the vet was going to keep her in over night and try to save her but after an X-ray they discovered her bladder was so severly infected with a bacteria that would not be treatable.

It was so so hard to accept but poorly Pearl had to be put to sleep. She fought on so hard and that is why I couldn't accept it was time but it was the kind thing to do. She lived a great life and was very pampered.

I loved her so much, I'm so upset it came to this, I'm sure everyone on here can understand.
R.I.P beautiful Pearl, love you x x x

Aww I am so sorry that Pearl has gone, a truly upsetting situation, you tried your best, unfortunately but fortunately these experiences make us more experienced in the end, so if they should ever happen to us again we are better able to deal with them. RIP poor Pearl and ((((Hugs))) to you too.

Just caught up on the thread, I'm so soryr you lost Pearl, you tried your best but sometimes these thigns happen and we're not to know the full extent of a problem until it's too late.
RIP pearl, you will be missed x
