Hi all, just a quick question for you - I have a neutered boar and two females and they are all bouncy, bright and well. However, in the last week or so, I have noticed that they all have soggy bottoms. The fur from about a centimetre above their grease gland to the floor seems to be damp and messy (not pooey, just a bit unpleasant - their poos are normal), and this is most unusual as they are usually very clean. It has not just been a one-off as I've noticed it on each of them several times now and can't understand what it could be. I haven't changed anything at all, with the exception of them getting more time in the run on the grass when the weather is better. Could this have something to do with it? Any ideas would be gratefully received.

are they long haired?, if they have been out on the grass then that will make them wee more, what are they bedded on?

Thanks fluff, it could be the grass making them wee more as their beds are wetter. They are on newspaper and heaps of hay and are short haired. Should I limit their grass intake or just bath them & keep the cage pristine? Or any other ideas?

Cut there skirts, short back will sort your problem out. Might not look as attractive but will be better for piggy hygiene and means they get to enjoy all the grass time they want :) x

Mine are indoor piggies and I have noticed the same thing. I even made a post about it a few weeks ago the same as you did.

I switched from using newspaper to carefresh bedding in the kitchen area of their cage. I like the change, the carefresh absorbs much quicker than the newspaper.

I also started putting cotton towels on their fleecy pet beds. I realized, the beds were not wicking the wee away from them and they were just sitting in it.

They still have a day, or two days in a row, here and there where they have much more wet bottoms than normal (actually normally they are dry, so when they are wet, it is really noticable...like WET!). I think it may be correlated with their 'time', because Penny sprays Honey quite a bit with wee whenever Honey gets frisky around her (they are both girls). She sprays her right in the face. I've started trying to keep track of the 'time' and the wet bottoms to see if they happen at the same time. My girls are on different cycles...they each come into their time about every 15-16 days, and are almost exactly off by a week from each other (they are about 7 months old, so quite hormonal). I always know when Honey has her 'time' because she rumble struts like a crazy pig (and funny, this is the only time she ever popcorns...rumble...pop....rumble....pop) while my other piggie, the subordinate one, it is harder to tell her 'time', she doesn't give many signals.

Maybe someone else has seen the same correlation between the girls 'time' and wet bottoms? I think the spraying has something to do with it.

try using a more absorbant bedding then newspaper, its not very good and it contains ink/chemicals which would be no good for them if they eat it and we all know pigs will eat newspaper.
carefresh is good or find soft wood shavings then put plenty of hay on top, i have used this for 40 odd years and encountered no problems
