The past Ausgust bank holiday weekend has been a rather sad and pretty hectic time for me.

By Friday evening I was absolutely certain that Hywel’s recurring dental root/jawbone abscess was starting up by the jaw yet again - for the fifth time!

Yesterday morning, Hywel has gone to live with @furryfriends (TEAS) as a permanent resident at The Excellent Adventure Sanctuary for guinea pigs with special needs (TEAS) because he will require constant observation and prompt vet access to help prevent any further abscesses from flaring up again in the future. My best local vets have proven that they can’t cope with his problems, which has already ended in two big abscess operations just this year. I am extremely grateful that my nearly 7 year old Hywel has been given the opportunity to live out his life as a sanctuary resident for as long as he can enjoy it. Without furryfriends’ and vet Simon Maddock’s help and competence, Hywel would not be alive now. Hywel has of course been put on an antibiotic straight away.

Since Hywel has already spent several weeks as a holiday boarder at TEAS when one of his abscesses healed closed far too soon while my husband was undergoing two operations in close succession and my old Nerys was fighting for her life, my old boy is thankfully settling in quickly at the sanctuary and is going to meet some resident sows to live with soon. I am looking forward to seeing him again in less than 3 weeks when he will attend the big TEAS event on 17th September where I am going to run the cake counter as always.
(PS: As we were going to take Hywel to TEAS once the Cat&Rabbit Care Clinic re-opened again after the bank holiday anyway, my home provided a very convenient stop-over for Sian’s Milan and Effie to bridge the timing issues with TEAS).

Sadly, on Sunday evening, we had to rush my 8 year old very frail Nerys to the out-of-hours services for pts; an infection in her eye was literally blowing up with an infection with such speed that any medical treatment would simply not have kicked in fast enough. :( While I have been braced that she could pass away anytime, this has nevertheless come as a big shock to us, especially to my husband, who has been fond of both my oldies.

The Tribe is currently still very subdued, especially my two two difficult-to-match “widows” Nesta and Tegan; as always after the passing of one of their number. Irrespective of how many furballs I am looking after, my piggy room is feeling rather empty without the presence of my two oldest, both of who are/were big pigsonalities and have been with me for over 5 and 7 years respectively. It is going to take some time to retrain myself not to automatically check up on them all the time anymore. :mal:

Oh Wiebke I am so sorry to hear about both of your precious oldies.
But how wonderful for sweet Hywel to have a chance to live out his days with the best quality of life possible. I am sure it wasn't easy to let him go.

And as for dear Nerys - since joining the forum I have always looked out for updates about her. She seems like such a miracle piggie, and I can only hope that some of mine reach such an amazing age.

So sorry for your loss.
Sending big hugs from Switzerland for you and your husband and the remaining tribe members too.

I'm so sorry, sounds like you've had such a time of it over the past few days.

I'm glad Hywel will get to live out his time at the sanctuary where he can have instant care if needed, it must be somewhat comforting knowing that he is in extremely competent and capable hands. Hard to see him go too though I imagine.

Sleep tight Nerys, and hugs to you and and your human and piggy family ❤️

I'm sorry to read this. It's hard to give them up, even though you know Hywel is in the best possible hands. Sleep well Nerys and popcorn free. Love and hugs from Australia xx

I'm very sorry about Nerys, she was beautiful and it must've been a hard decision to part with hywel but he's in the best place and will get the best treatment for his abscess.Sending hugs to you and your husband xx

It has been such a sad few days for you :(

I'm so sorry that you lost Nerys :( but she put up a brave fight and has left behind so many precious memories.

Saying goodbye to Hywel must have been such a difficult decision :( but you have put his needs before your own. He will always be your boy and I'm pleased you will still be able to visit him and receive regular updates.

(((Hugs))) xx

I'm sorry for your loss of your older piggies, going to TEAS will seem like a bereavment,Hewel is in the best care.Hugs to you and your husband.x

Huge hugs.Am so sorry about your loss.I know how hard it is to let piggies go even if it is for their own good.It is one of the things a good owner does.I had to rehome six of my girls a couple years ago.Boss hogg has two of them.

Sorry to hear about Nerys and Hewel, Wiebke. They will both have had great lives with you.

You know how sorry I am about dear Nerys - a very lovely old lady, who had the most wonderful life with you. Yes, the end when it came was sudden, but at least you know she didn't suffer. RIP sweet girl.

And it's sad that Hywel (a special favourite of mine) has had to move to a "special care unit" but as you know he'll get the best of attention, with very speedy access to Simon when and if he needs it. And of course you'll get to visit him, which is lovely.

Big hugs - it's been a difficult time for you.
