The past Ausgust bank holiday weekend has been a rather sad and pretty hectic time for me.
By Friday evening I was absolutely certain that Hywel’s recurring dental root/jawbone abscess was starting up by the jaw yet again - for the fifth time!
Yesterday morning, Hywel has gone to live with @furryfriends (TEAS) as a permanent resident at The Excellent Adventure Sanctuary for guinea pigs with special needs (TEAS) because he will require constant observation and prompt vet access to help prevent any further abscesses from flaring up again in the future. My best local vets have proven that they can’t cope with his problems, which has already ended in two big abscess operations just this year. I am extremely grateful that my nearly 7 year old Hywel has been given the opportunity to live out his life as a sanctuary resident for as long as he can enjoy it. Without furryfriends’ and vet Simon Maddock’s help and competence, Hywel would not be alive now. Hywel has of course been put on an antibiotic straight away.
Since Hywel has already spent several weeks as a holiday boarder at TEAS when one of his abscesses healed closed far too soon while my husband was undergoing two operations in close succession and my old Nerys was fighting for her life, my old boy is thankfully settling in quickly at the sanctuary and is going to meet some resident sows to live with soon. I am looking forward to seeing him again in less than 3 weeks when he will attend the big TEAS event on 17th September where I am going to run the cake counter as always.
(PS: As we were going to take Hywel to TEAS once the Cat&Rabbit Care Clinic re-opened again after the bank holiday anyway, my home provided a very convenient stop-over for Sian’s Milan and Effie to bridge the timing issues with TEAS).
Sadly, on Sunday evening, we had to rush my 8 year old very frail Nerys to the out-of-hours services for pts; an infection in her eye was literally blowing up with an infection with such speed that any medical treatment would simply not have kicked in fast enough.
While I have been braced that she could pass away anytime, this has nevertheless come as a big shock to us, especially to my husband, who has been fond of both my oldies.
The Tribe is currently still very subdued, especially my two two difficult-to-match “widows” Nesta and Tegan; as always after the passing of one of their number. Irrespective of how many furballs I am looking after, my piggy room is feeling rather empty without the presence of my two oldest, both of who are/were big pigsonalities and have been with me for over 5 and 7 years respectively. It is going to take some time to retrain myself not to automatically check up on them all the time anymore.
