Phew!

We've had some changes over here this last week or so. I finally admitted that it was time to get Dustin and my two not-so-baby-anymore girls into the herd (and out of the house!) and retire my lovely old boar Lester and a couple of old ladies to live the quiet life free from the rabble that is my herd. Muffin, Kalani (both around 5) and Lester (4 ish) have moved to live next to Skye (6) and will hopefully get her to come out of her shell and be able to live out her days with some company. Skye hasn't lived with other piggies for around a year since her eye was removed as she's found dealing with other guinea pigs very difficult and every attempted introduction to even the most sedate guinea pigs has ended in her trying to kill them, bless her. I'm hoping living next to these three (who are very calm piggies) will help her realise that other piggies aren't so bad afterall, there's no need to panic when she meets one, and I'll eventually be able to remove the divide between them.

So it's been an end of an era in terms of our herd boar, Lester seems very pleased with his new arrangement though and the promise of a quieter life with his lovely older wives. Dustin meanwhile is the happiest boar on the planet. He's spent the last few months looking after Violet and Fizz, two of my newer baby girls I adopted at the same time as Dustin back in October. They've had the prime spot of being inside right next to the fridge, so they've been quite spoiled really. But the intention was always for them to move to the herd when the girls were bigger and that's what we've done!

It wasn't the easiest introduction I've had and the herd felt 'off' for a good few days with lots of panicked piggies, bless them. To date they've taken every change and new addition with no fuss whatsoever but for some reason this one they didn't enjoy at all. Poor Violet has ended up with a tear in her ear after (I think) panicking and running into a bigger piggy that's just snapped at her by accident. Aside from that, all the piggies are now fine and Dustin's definitely growing into his new role as chief boar - a role I hope he will have for many years to come. Fizz and Violet are starting to realise that there are certain perks to being baby guinea pigs in a herd - like being able to cuddle up to the top sow, Mia, and pinch food right from other piggies' mouths... and get away with it!

Happy herd once again, and a very relieved hooman.

I need a drink!

This made me laugh, you are very dedicated to guinea pigs! Herds are soo much fun to care for! But also very hetic. Enjoy it! x

Well done. Piggy diplomatic corps beckons for you if you can sort all those pigsonalities out!

My herd is one of my favourite parts of owning guinea pigs! I've got many pairs and a couple of trios and while I obviously love them to pieces, there's nothing quite like watching a herd of 18 piggies doing their thing with all their interactions. Babies irritating older guinea pigs, older guinea pigs irritating each other, older guinea pigs acting like baby pigs. The pecking order with my much berated top sow wondering why do the others barber her to the point where she looks like something that escaped from a fight with a lawn mower rather than the glorious peruvian she knows she is. I love them.

Oh good lord no! Dealing with my bunch is more than enough piggy diplomacy for me! :D

Wow, you have your hands full but I bet it is worth it as you say. Watching interactions between so many must be fascinating and a real insight into herd mechanics that us owners with smaller amounts never get to see on such a scale. I felt we had our hands full with a quad at times during seasons.... The Noise!
