What aged guinea pigs can have alfalfa hay?

Mum bought lucerne hay from the produce store, and was told it was the same as alfalfa. My guinea pig is about 7 months old and I don't know how old the ones we are fostering are; at least a couple of years. Is this type of hay bad for them?

Lucerne hay is alfalfa, so higher in calcium and protein than any grass hays.

The ideal age range for feeding alfalfa/lucerne is usually up to 6-8 months, and for pregnant/nursing sows. Any pig of any age can have this type of hay, just limit it to once in a while for the adults. :)

Bonnie, in one of your parcels I sent a small bag of Oxbow Orchard Grass. I feed my lot on it pretty much exclusively, it's great hay, should be a nice treat for your boys. :)

Oops well mine have been having it constantly, so I'll look into getting some grass/meadow/oaten hay and keep the lucerne as a treat :) How often should it be given?

oooo sounds go i have trouble getting anything other than lucerne hayrolleyes anything else i have gotten is really dry and completely brown i think i will have to try hay you have sent then if they like it i will have to start ordering offline xxxxxxx

I think if I were a piggy I would love that stuff! :)) But seriously, it has such a pretty color and smells better than any other hay I've bought.
 
lindsecm - www.kmshayloft.com is one to look at as well if you can. Apparently it is even ten times better than Oxbow. The Bluegrass is heavenly, by all reports!

omg that hay you sent i just have to say wow! i have never felt hay so soft before or seen it that green,the UK must have very high quality hay,my boys went mad over it thanks heaps xxxxx
forgot to add i am going to order some this week,they won't want pasture hay now.
 
Unfortunately not UK hay, it's imported from the US! Oxbow is getting more widely available here now though. It is expensive if bought in small quantities, but bought in bulk it definitely pays its way. I buy a 22kg box of the Orchard Grass and it comes to about the same price as I'd pay for the same amount of meadow hay. Some UK hay is fairly green, but nowhere near the quality of the Oxbow. :)

:)) :p

Well that is the best stuff I've found and I have to drive at least 45 min to Lexington to get it! My vet sells it and its actually cheaper there than at the pet stores...and it's a huge bag so it lasts longer than the other stuff I've been buying. Oh yeah and the pigs love it! :)
