Two piggies with fungal in the exact same ear.... is this normal. Are the chances high?

They're kept in their own, averagely heated room, spot cleaned every day, bowls are cleaned every day, I don't understand. I'm really starting to worry that i'm not a good owner.

xx

You're not a bad owner at all. Fungal can spread. One of my girls once had a fungal infection that started on her ear and spread to her cheek and back. I made the decision to keep her with her friends which put them at risk of catching it as well but thankfully, they didn't.

These things just happen xx

2 of mine (in a group of 3 ) had fungals - a circle near their eyes when I moved house - one was worse than the other but both same side of face ... I think the stress of moving brought it out in them as one of them had the same when I got her .... it took a few weeks but cleared up ..... the 3rd one was totally fine until she had her teeth done a few weeks back and she broke out in it too .... stress related ? who knows in my case but turns out hers is officially ringworm (been tested) and everyones being treated at the moment....

I dont think that makes me or you a bad piggy-mum ..... I hope not anyway

x

Ack, Ringworm *hides*!

I hope it doesn't make us bad piggy mums, I was jut curious to know if anyone could think of a reason my routine or set up wouldnt' be up to scratch. But you guys all know me and my piggies and if you don't think it's my fault then chances are i'm just being melodramatic as usual ;) x

Just be careful to always wash your hands etc. very carefully after handling either piggy.

When my foster piggies had a fungal infection the whole cage was disinfected every day, to kill the spores.

We used to treat the piggies, put them in a carrier, disinfect the cage and then put them back in. We did it everyday for 3 weeks.

Also you would need to treat all the piggies and cages in the same room, or any that you could have unintentionally spread it too. Even simple things like using the same dust pan and brush or stroking a piggy and not washing your hands inbetween pigs could spread it.

You need to treat any that could be infected at the same time or you will just keep going round in circles.

Have you had a new piggy that could have brought it in?

Nope, no new piggies that could have bought it in.

Ummhmmmm... I'll disinfect the cage and treat hopalong his cage mate wiht anti fungal. xx

I should mention mine are all being currently treated with Imaverol for the ringworm .... this is the 3 that are in the cage with the one diagnosed with it and the other 5 I have (cage next door - none showing any signs of it) ..... and it does involve 4 treatments to the piggys (all of them) and also everything theyve been in contact with totally disinfected too .....

Seems its not easy to get rid of ..... I hope this will clear mine up - the only pig showing any symptoms is getting better but she is the hardest to treat as she has bad teeth and had a big op for a dental abscess last week, has an open wound and cannot be properly dipped/sponged like the rest in the solution....

Hope you can get yours cleared up .... and if nothing else.... we will have clean cages / hutches.... rolleyes

xx
