What are the implications of keeping Boars and Sows?

hi,

i have 2 boars (13 wks) and am thinking of getting 2 sows (2 yrs) (on preloved.co.uk) they come with their own double hutch.

Now obviously i know they have to housed seperately ;) but what are the implications of them using the outdoor run after the boys, will the boys be able to smell them even though they are in a seperate hutch, who goes first for floor time ....etc etc.

the lady is emailing me this afternoon so any advice - pros & cons from those of you that keep both would be fab.

We have got 2 pairs of boys and 2 trios of girls so can understand your dilemma. I have read many times that having girls around can upset the balance between contented boars, but I have to say that in all my years of having both sexes at the same time, I have never had a problem.

I would think to minimise any possible problems it would be best to put the boys out in the run for floor time first and I would also move the run to a new area, particularly when the girls have been in it. When it comes to clean out time, I generally do the boys first, again so they don't get a whiff of the girlie's on me! The other way round doesn't seem to cause a problem, the girls give my hands a quick sniff and then go back to what they were doing - not at all bothered by boarly scents! :D :D

Can i just ask, As some of you know, i have two females and who had a lil baby boy Boo, i am thinking about getting Boo a male friend but i would like to know if two males can smell the females?

Hi thanks for that, but i thought the males have a fight if they smell girls?
 
Me neither. My oldest boar Snowy is just over 3 and has sired a litter, he is now living with his grandson Herbie who is about 18 months old. The other pair are Snowy's son Tetley (2 and a half) and his son Curly (18 months). Despite having been with sows for a short while in the past, both Snowy and Tetley are happy with their male friends (Tetley still "tries it on" at times with Curly, but my loveable lump doesn't take an nonsense from his dad!) no fisticuffs in this house - touching wood quickly ;D

I have 18 guineas 8 boys and 10 girls they all live in a shed together (separately of course) I have had no real problems, a couple of little scuffles with a teenage couple ::) but nothing to nasty (no blood drawn) I tend to keep these little chaps higher up, so they can not see any females but of course they can smell and hear them,but that does not seem to be to much of a problem most of the time.
