Hey guys,

My little boar Ginger is having his neuter on Tuesday i found a little bit online about hospital cages but not very much.

I've got plenty of old cream towels to use from when i tried them out on fleece, I given them a wash and prepared to use them for the first week changing it daily with newspaper underneath.

I just wondered when i could put him back on to Fitch a paper based bedding?

I was also going to put his hay in the hay rack or do you think i should put some in the corner of his cage so it's easier for him to eat?

I know it's still 3 days away but I like to have everything ready in my head and know what I'm doing!

Thank you in Advance!

:)

Keep hay off the floor so it doesnt get into his sore bits. You could use fitch in his litter trat under hay rack and then fleece for the main cage. I think I kept mine going for 4 weeks but if healing well you could change back sooner

Thanks Briony,

I wasn't sure about the hay and I'll keep him on soft fleece and towels until the wound if fully healed as i don't want him to get anything stuck in it and get an infection.

I'll also give him his cuddle cup and fleece tunnel to snuggle in so he can be warm.

Would you give him a hot water bottle underneath the towel or fleece to keep him warm or do you think that's a bad idea?

My Rebel was on a fleece, his hay food etc were in bowls at head height so he didn't have to stretch, he was kept in a warm quiet bedroom to allow him to recuperate. The only problem I had was once the stitches had fully healed and he was moved in with the girls, he developed an abscess so it was back to the hospital cage until he was healed. He was a good lad who took all his meds without struggling. ;)

Thanks guys, he's inside my bedroom and i do turn the heating for a hour when i get in just to warm the room up while it's so cold, he isn't anywhere near a window or anything so there shouldn't be any drafts for him.

^ That's what I'm so worried about that he might get and abscess or infection but I'm going to keep his cage as clean as possible without disturbing him too much as he'll need his rest.

Thanks for the advice everyone! :)

How old is your boar, as I want to get one of mine done to but don't know when is the right age. Thanks

I got told to wait until he was 6 months old, I wouldn't choose to have mine done if i had other boars but all my other guinea pigs are girls and i have one who has fallen out with the rest.

I only want him done as he keeps fighting with my other boys and want to partner him up with 2 of my ladies, but not for breeding. Hopefully this will make him more settled if he had permanent family.

Rebel was 10 months old, he only got done so he could move in with the girls when his old hutch mate Barty died. He is a laid back individual who enjoys everyone's company. :D

In my hospital cage I have a cat lit tray with newspaper topped with soft white paper bedding but a towel or vet bed would be OK. For the main floor area I use newspapers topped with puppy pads or infant training sheets that are similar but larger. There i a turquoise pack of 10 for £2.99 in Home Bargains. The ideal thing about using white bedding & flooring is that if there is any blood you can see it easily. You can also see if they're weeing OK & it's easy to clean up any poos. These pads or sheets should be changed daily to avoid infection if it's after an operation.

Some vets say 4 months some

6 think it depends on size of their testicles (need to be big enough?) Not sure though

Ive had 3 pigs done but only due to having lots of girls. The smell of girls seems to drive them mad lol

When i phoned the vet she said 6 months so i just waited that long, Oh tell me about it... if ginger sniffs the girls on me or in the room he goes crazy and spends a good few hours squeaking and biting the bars which I'm not very keen on him doing as I'm worried for his teeth!

I have to be really careful to not smell like my other five piggies, I have to wah my hands before picking him up or hold him first so there's no scent on my clothes from the girls! :))

Have you had any complications with your 3 boys after the op?

I'm still really worried... :(

I personally use newspaper for hospital cages and change it many times during the day :-) usually have something like a puppy pad under to absorb.

Thanks Bekki, I've put newspaper on the main part and will change it when needed and a small white hand towel with a cozy sack at one end for him with a fleece tunnel.

I've got plenty of hand towels and cozies for him so will keep it as clean as i can.

His hay is in the hay rack so shouldn't get in his operation site.

Fingers crossed he'll be back later and the op would have been a success! :)

I've got lots of tasty treats for him too...
