Hi,

i just bought 2 new piggies today one all white (Trixie) and one white with brown smudges (smudge) but i'm unsure of the breed as it's one i haven't kept before. Not sure if they are coronets, or crested guinea pigs. Tehy are are about 6 weeks old, but wasn't sure if you'd be able to tell if they were long haired or not by this age?

Thanks

xx

I presume your cavies are crested? I will further presume that they are smooth-haired cavies? Therefore, I will hazard a guess that your two cavies are English Crested cavies. Trixie is either a Self PE (pink-eyed) or DE (dark-eyed) White English Crested, depending on her eye colour. However, I would hazard a guess that Smudge is Bi - coloured Agouti and White English Crested cavy. However, I can't say for sure without a photograph. On the other hand, many breeds of cavy can have a crest. By six weeks, you would be able to tell whether they will be long-haired cavies.

Pics.

Here are the pictures of the two. the brown and white ones fur definately feels/ looks longer than the white one. but still unsure.

Gorgeous girls! Trixie is indeed a PE (pink-eyed) White English Crested. However, Smudge appears to be a Gold and White Coronet. You have checked that they are both sows?

Yeah checked when i got them and again when i got them home :) both are lovely, and seem to have settled in well. :D tried introducing them to the other sows i have but one of them got a bit aggressive. not sure whether i should try again ?

I am pleased they are both sows. ;)

I would attempt to introduce them to your other sows again. However, ensure you introduce all the sows on neutral territory, and that they have no reason to fight. For example, lack of food, water, hideouts etc. It is also advisable to introduce Trixie and Smudge to the subordinate sows in your herd first, before introducing them to the dominate sow in your herd.

Although, the above methods should work, if the above methods do not work, there are other methods, including, rubbing the scent of the other sows on Trixie and Smudge, and bathing all the sows before introducing them. Good luck! :)

The only way to tell if you have Coronet guineas is to wait and see if their hair grows. One is a pink-eyed white and the other is golden and white.
