chesney and maisie are being treated for mites as of last night and obviously i need to clean the cage and house aswell to make sure they are gone from the environment. can anyone recommend a good cleaner/spray to use? i have the johnsons cage and hutch spray but it's really strong. would it be ok to clean the cage and safe for piggies? i also have the conficlean2 spray cleaner aswell but i don't know if this helps/kills mites. if anyone knows any other cleaner that is suitable let me know. thanks. :)

which one is it you get? there's powder and tablet ones! :{ is virkon pet and virkon s the same thing? is there a place that is cheapest to get it from? :)

www.sphsupplies.co.uk is a good place to buy from, I've seen Virkon on there. It says that Virkon Pet is the same as Virkon S - just different packaging. You can use either powder or tablet, since I assume both would be dissolved into water to make up a solution, but the general idea I get is that tablet is easier.

thank you! again! bet you feel like i'm everywhere you turn lately! :))

Not at all, you know I am happy to help. Wish I had this kind of support when I first started out with piggies! Anyway, I learn just as much advising as I do when I'm studying/asking/learning myself.

much appreciated. xx>>>

just ordered some virkon, the tablets, and a spray bottle aswell, and the buns avipro plus aswell whilst i was there! :)

Virkon is great but I would wear gloves as it's very strong.

It goes bright pink when you dissolve the tablet (in warm water) and gradually fades as it gets less potent, so it's important to throw old mix away. Depends how many animals you've got, I use a whole 500ml bottle each clean out so not a problem!

i have gloves already so that's good!

i only have two guineas and will be using it in their cage, and also around the house so hopefully i can get rid of the mites. :)

Just been scanning Google and it seems it's okay for plastic cages...will find a link to check for sure.

Just doublechecked the packaging and it doesn't say it's not ok - so probably is! Sorry, must have had it mixed up with something else. Also it says it's ok for 5 days once made up...

Um, also - it's fungicidal, bactericidal and virucidal but not inscectidical - if that's how you spell it... I always use Johnson's cage insecticidal cage spray for mites or lice, and Virkon for general discinfecting and fungal.

I have always used pets at home own anti bacterial spray its brill and kills mites and fleas and also gets the cage very clean.

no probs. :)) the johnsons says no plastic cages, maybe you were thinking of that?

looks like i shouldn't have bought it then if it's no good for mites! typical!

It's definitely worth having, and is the best all-purpose stuff I've used - I used it every time I do a full clean out :)

it will be useful to have then. i can always use it up. i have a bottle of conficlean2 at the moment. that's good stuff.

the johnsons one says if it has to be used on plastic, test on a small area first and then spray from a further distance so i will ty that. just a bit wary using it with the pigs though.

i'm sure i've used it in that cage before though. the buns used it as their base for a short time and they had mites aswell and i'm sure i used it then. can't remember though!

i just need something that i can clean the house with now.

The Johnson's stuff smells terrible, but I take the pigs out, clean it out, spray all over (windows open!) and leave it for quite a while before replacing the bedding etc.

I'm not sure mites live in the house, like fleas do. Frontline household spray might work?

i will just use the johnsons in the cage then and i will use the vikron around the area they are in. may aswell use it now i've bought it!

when is the best time to use the mite spray? at the beginning of their treatment or towards the end? the johnsons cage and hutch one.

Do it with each treatment, Lea. That way, you kill any mites in the cage at the same time as killing any mites on them.
