Any ideas on what I can do to get gabbi eating again? She is on a course of Baytril for Pneumonia. She is starting to look better but she's still not eating for herself apart form the odd bit of veggies an a tiny bit of hay. I'm keeping her going with science recovery and syringing her water but she's not producing any poos. The vet said her tummy has sounds and its nice and soft. I was wondering about a poop soup, do you think this might help her to regain her appetite back?

Have you any probiotics? That will settle Gabbi's tummy :)

Yes poo soup is wonderful too..........do you know the 'recipe' it is on here, Niki has given it a few times :)

she's getting probiotics in the water i'm syringing her but she's not getting a lot. I'm not sure of the poop soup recipe. I wonder if i might have some fibreplex in the garage, i'll go and look :)

I've found that grass is the best thing for a poorly piggy. They will usually eat that when they don't fancy anything else.

Poop soup is given to help restore gut flora when a pig has soft poops usually caused by veg).

Baytril can affect the appetite & the most likely reason she's not producing poops is probably because she's not eating enough which in turn can lead to statis. Did your vet give her metaclopramide which is a gut stimulant?

How much syringe food are you giving? You should aim for 120ml per day.

I agree with threelittlepigs grass is rarely refused, you could also try her with dandelion leaves.

Are you giving extra Vit C? If not you can buy the tablets (not effervescent) from supermarkets etc. Pop one into her mouth for her to crunch or alternatively crush it into your syringe mix.

Thanks for all the info. I asked the vet if she needed one of the injections that stimulate the gut which i'm presuming is the one you mentioned and he said she still had movement in her gut so she didn't need one. Yes you're right about the grass and dandelions, she has eaten "some" but not much. She is getting a full packet of science recovery a day which is about 60ml, I'm feeding her this every few hours. Her breathing is still pretty laboured, her sides are going in and out quite quickly but not as bad as a few days ago. I have also split her Baytril in to 2 doses a day instead of all at once, she's now getting 0.2ml twice a day. I read on another post that this was the thing to do if it was upsetting the tummy. The vet yesterday told me that the science recovery is made so that it is all absorbed by the body and there is no waste product that comes back out as poop and if she was only managing little bits otherwise she wouldn't have much poop. he said that as long as she is weeing ok and she had sounds from her tummy which he could hear then that was fine. I wish I had asked for another vet to take a look at her but they were busy with a dog being pts in the other room. Apart from what I have mentioned she has eaten a little veg, a baby corn, a little round lettuce, some parsley and very small amount of hay. I think she at a tiny bit out of her dry food bowl( just 1 or2 bits) She is still very still but seems quite strong and her coat eyes etc all look healthy. I just wish she would start eating more for herself and start producing some more poops. I think I'm doing all I can but if anyone has any more advice it would be greatfully received. :)

I am not a vet so don't know how you can tell there is movement in the gut but I have had a pig who was close to death, no appetite, had sunken eyes & had lost weight. I syringe fed him on the Sunday & got him to the vet Monday where he was given baytril incase there was any infection but he was also given metaclopramide to stimulate his gut with more of each dispensed to me to give him at home.
He would take between 30-50mls of syringe food per sitting & his poops were tiny like hamster poops. Once his appetite started to come back, he ate small amounts of veg & the difference could be seen in the size of his poops.

I find it hard to believe that SR food is totally absorbed & this is why there are no poops because i know of a pig who was totally syringe fed for months (on SR & CC) who produced poops.
I can't say i've heard my guinea pigs guts make noises except for when one had gas but like i say i'm no vet & can only give my own personal opinion.

I do hope your girl gets better. :)

Morning all, I'm happy to say that Gabbi seems a bit better this morning, she is producing some near normal poops while she is being syringe fed and just after but still not much inbetween. She seems a bit more interested in hay this morning, she was eating hay inbetween mouthfulls of SR ( I made sure the hay had gone down before putting more SR in her mouth) She also, for the first time in days, responded when she heard the bag of parsley coming, she's normally the top sqeaker out of the bunch. No squeaking yet but at least she was aware enough to know it was coming. She's had this morning, 15ml of SR made up quite thick, a bit of hay and a small amount of parsley. Meds she has had are Baytril, 100mg of vit C Chewable ( I found some in the cupboard) 0.2 ml Calpol, 0.5ml metatone, and 1ml fibreplex. She's resting now in her little furry house so I might have time now to go and get dressed :)
Hopefully she has turned a corner today and will be able to be back with her friends, Ben and Apple in a few days.

Thats all very helpfull, thank you. She's picking up a bit now and her weight is stable, I'm weighing her every morning. The vet listened with a stethoscope to her tummy, that's how he could hear. I agree with you about the SR being totally absorbed but at least we're getting "some" poops now so not to worry. I'll feel better when her breathing slows up a bit more, she's slowly getting there but it takes time. I saw on a site that olbas oil is ok to help breathing for pigs but it didn't say how to use it for them do you know? Thanks again :)

Really pleased to hear that Gabbi is improving xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxo
Sorry can't help on the olbas oil...........hopefully someone who's used or knows about it will post for you :)
Please give Gabbi some friendly brrrrrrrrr's and healing wheeeeeeks from the girls and I XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Thanks I will, just going to start another session of syringing. I keep hoping that each one will be the last and she's going to be ok. Gabbi says Wheeeek back lol :)

Update!

Well.... I've been back to the vets again...just got back in. Gabbi is still breathing very heavily, she's slightly improved eating wise, she'll eat hay and veggies if encouraged to, otherwise she's just sitting in her bed all the time. The vet weighed her and she's gained 60g since sat, she gave her a longer lasting steroid injection, one of the ones to stimulate her gut ( sorry can't remember the name) and furesemide. She said that she possibly might have some fluid in her abdomen but wasn't too sure, her heart sounded normal and she couldn't hear any murmers or fluid in there. She couldn't hear fluid on her lungs, just the noises she would make if there was still an infection going on. She gave me some tablets to crush to carry on with the furesemide ( not sure if I'm spelling it right) She used the dreaded expression " If she doesn't improve we might have to put her to sleep" I don't care if I have to nurse her for the rest of her life, as long as she's not in continuous pain I won't do that, she's still only very young, I'm sure she will get better eventually.
