my guinea pig died 16 hours ago and i dont know what to do with my other guinea pig. Hes not very active and only lays on the floor, hes been chewing on the cage as well. Fortunately hes eating and talking. Do i buy a new guinea pig as soon as possible? I'm knowledgable about bonding boars, but i dont know if he can bond again or not. How long should i wait to get him a new mate? He looks lonely and searches for his friend.

I’m so sorry for your loss

He will be in a period of grieving and how soon you get a new friend depends on how he is coping - piggies will usually be ok on their own somewhere between 1 and 4 weeks. However if a piggy were to go into acute pining then the need for a new friend becomes more urgent.

He will be able to bond again but you have to find the correct friend with whom he is character compatible.
If you do not have the option of dating at a rescue centre to ensure compatibility, then you need to have a plan in case the bond fails and they have to live side by side

I dont know if he knows his mate died. I took him out of the cage when i saw him dying and rushed to the vet, but he had already passed in the car. He was still alive. What happens if hes not aware?

They can be aware that the friend is unwell or passing away so he may already have known something wasn’t right before you removed him from the cage.

He will realise his friend hasn’t returned though so he will still grieve in the same way

So very sorry for your loss xx and for your piggy. My Stan lost his companion who was his son - he was so sad and cried and cried. I cuddled him on my chest for many hours on and off and that really helped but we made the decision to give another rescue boar a home. There are so many rescues with piggies needing homes and you can find one that should hopefully suit your piggy - the local rescue will help when you are ready - you both need a little time to grieve and be kind to yourself too - it’s a tough time x
