Ive been looking through the interent and can't find any guinea pig rescue places where I live.
I have a 8ft by 6ft shed that I'm turning into abit ov piggy heaven at the moment but I'm thinking ov taking everything out as its only junk and setting up a rescue centre.

this is only an idea at the moment just wondered what u all thought. :)

Hi Kath,

It's a nice idea but there are defo more cons to consider...

You may go out and come back to find a box full of pigs on your doorstep with no note or contact details.

You may have unlimited vet bills and the cost of keeping them may prove to be too costly.

People only really want baby pigs or young ones which means you'd be left with the older pigs. Personally I love older pigs!

I do think it is a good idea but you have to weigh everything up. I was thinking of doing it but with a few more people onboard, perhaps have a rescue with a few other homes offering to help in other areas.

Good luck!

Have you volunteered at a rescue before? I would do this as the first step - you certainly get an idea of how hard it is after only a few hours, bear in mind it's full time. When and how will you start turning people away when you are full? Will you have the time to do homechecks? Do you have experience of pregnant piggies and the things you need to look out for? Like SunshineAndTwinkle says, do you have the funds for vet bills? I don't think I know any private rescuer that hasn't had to dip into their own income when donations ran out.

I'm positive your heart is in the right place but maybe you should give fostering a try first to make sure it's for you?

I spoke to the lady who runs the rescue where I got my girls from yesterday, hubby is allocating one side of his brick built shed to the piggies so will be able to get a couple more,at the moment she has 40 piggies in,since I rehomed the girls in April she has rehomed 28 piggies,it costs her about £30 per week just for food thats without hay and F+V,it's great if you can do it,but think long and hard.Good luck :)

Why not foster care for the RSPCA sort out the accomadation(your shed) first then ring your local branch and offer your services to them ;) they pay vets bills ect so the burden would not be yours they also find the homes and do the homechecks.

I think thats a very good idea

Like you we dont seem to have any rescue near me in Scunthorpe. Sounds a good idea to be a foster mum. Would love to do something like that to help out the RSPCA. :)
