Usually when we go away for a couple of days, say for a weekend or up to a week, my neighbour pops in twice a day to feed the piggies and check they are OK. We do the same for her when she goes away.

But next year I'm going away for two weeks and I don't think it's fair to ask her to clean them out (and now they are on vetbed it really needs doing every few days).

What do other people do when they go on holiday?

PS And no, they can't come with us!

i dont go on holiday as i cant leave my dog :) havent had a holiday or stayed more than 1 night away from him since i got him 10yr ago :smitten:

Same here ;D ;D 4 piggies, 1 dog,1 tortoise,2 budgies, fish and 3 crabs........anyone want to move in and look after them ;D ;D ;D

I don't go on holiday either, not since I've had piggies anyway. If I did go away though I would ask a friend to look after them for the two weeks :)

lol Sammy i would but id have to move in with my lot ;D holidays just arent an option for some people ::)

Last time I went away they all stayed with my OH's mum. His little sister really enjoyed looking after them. Now I have a piggie-friendly housemate, so I would probably ask him to look after them.

I think I'd probably worry about them so I wouldn't enjoy my holiday anyway!
I'd come back more stressed than what I would have been before I left! ;D

We have five lady piggies in a big hutch, and a bunny in a separate hutch.

When we go away we load the hutches and all the clobber into the trailer and take it round to my mum's house. She is very accommodating and has the hutches outside her backdoor in the drive, and looks after them for us. :smitten:

We do miss them though.

I am going away in Feb next year and my piggies are boarding with a trusted member on this forum. There is a list of piggy boarding available on here somewhere ::)

I am going away for Easter and Ann (Alfie) is having Eccles and Pudsey and Emma is having Flora and Fleur. I am taking Sunshine and Twinkle with me as they are nutters! :D

luckily i still live at home so my mum looks after my 7 lol she doesnt clean the girls i do them the day I'm going away and do them when i come back, they live in a big open space in the shed and are on sawdust and generally stay pretty clean, i just bring the boys cage downstairs so she can sort them out easier.. and my mum just pops food into them and makes sure they are all ok have water/dry food and hay. mine all get spoilt so badly when I'm away as they go next to the tortoises do the indoor piggies and eveytime my mum goes past with weeds and grass for the torts, the choir starts and the 'we are so hungry, please feed us!' wheeks come out! lol even though they get a big dish of veggies a day!

dunno what I'm gunna do when i move out.. i'll have to bring them all upto my my mums lol I

None of the family would touch them with a bargepole, my in-laws are local and are animal haters ? My sister would but she lives 2 hours in the opposite direction.

I once persuaded my MIL to take my hamster, but it wasn't a success, she hated it.

The pet shop would board them but it's something ridiculous like £2 per pig per night, and I'd have to take their cage down there too.

I think if the neighbour doesn't mind, that's still the best solution, or maybe I'll take them round to hers this time if that's easier for her.

I stopped going away years ago.
Even though my sister moved in to look after all my animals I found I was spending way to much time on the phone checking the animals where ok ::)
the last holiday I had was 3 weeks in Florida and I had a phone bill of £95 ::) just on checking up ;D

If I'm going away for longer than a week I prefer to spend the money and pay for them to have boarding somewhere. Although it's expensive, I think of it as a holiday for the pigs too! and I prefer to pay and have peace of mind than worry about them the whole time.
If I'm going away for a night or two I can ask family to look after them

I never go anywhere LOL took some organising to get 7 hours away from the animals to go and see the thursford christmas show! My best friend and mum are always willing to help out but there are just too many fluffys to expect anyone else to look after them, have not been on holiday in 5 years. Did have a night away a while ago, dog cut his tail in the kennels and had to go straight to the vets when i got home never doing that again would rather be at home and know everyone is ok :)

For me, holidays are more important than animals. I'd never let them stop me from going away. I can't believe you stop having holidays to look after pets :o

i dont stop having holidays to look after my pets, i just personally couldnt leave my dog :smitten: I'm far happier at home with him snuggled into me :smitten: and nothing in this world is more important than my doggie to me :)

well I believe as I've made the choice to have my animals, I may have to sacrifice some things I don't want to. If I wasn't prepared to sacrifice things, I wouldn't have any animals.
Of course I still go away, but for my own peace of mind and to be sure the animals are as comfortable as they would be at home, I'm prepared to add to the cost of my holiday by paying for their boarding.

Holidays aren't really my thing either. I just go to the inlaws it's like a home from home really but we can have days out then. I prefer to stay at home, whenever I go on holiday it goes wrong. I've had nightmares in Great Yarmouth, Peeinyawellie Phwelli and France. Holidays and me do not mix too well.

:)

My friend looked after mine last time, but now I have four and it's not an option.
A few people have offered, but I have no plans for next year yet.

I am looking forward to sitting for Louise's boys.
I am going to get a full list off their Mummy about what they like and play time. :D :)

Well if you do Anne I would be happy to help, that goes to anyone local to me.

Eccles and Pudsey are very calm boys, especially Eccles who is such a sweetheart, I probably won't get them back! >:D

I am much happier and rerlaxed having a quiet time at home than on holiday - plus with upto 30 ish guineas, 2 ducks, 3 quail, 2 hamsters, several tropical fish tanks and a horse thats a lot for me to be worrying about when i am not here. I did lots of travelling when I was younger but I now find holidays much overrated and would rather stay at home with the phone turned off having a quiet time in my personal petting zoo lol.
My OH still goes on holiday (off to spain next year) so a week on my own with all my furry and feathered friends is the best holiday I can think of O0

I totally agree - these animals do not choose to be adopted by us so it's only right as far as I am concerned that we make sacrifices for them. I certainly don't go away as often as I would if I didn't have my little ones but I don't begrudge it.

I totally disagree. Don't get me wrong, I'm fond of my guinea pigs, and am happy to try my best to make them happy and healthy in my home. But I don't expect to make sacrifices for them, except of course for a bit of time and some space in the house. I expect to make sacrifices for my children, but not my pets.

If its only a weekend I ask my next door neighbour who's 10 to keep an eye on them, but she doesnt treat her own piggies and rabbit very well so I dont trust her with them for more than a few days. My rabbit always goes to one of my friends, but the guineas are much trickier. Last year they went for boarding at the petshop but Milly got a cold so we dont send them there. I dont know where they'll go this year to be honest! :-\

i think when you get pets you need to know that there is someone to watch your pets if you plan on going away, otherwise your stuck and do have to stop going on holiday etc because your pets can't be left on their own..

when i move out i will be in the same position, i had a very hard time when i went to majorca in september, my guinea pig shakey was at extremely ill and i really didnt want to leave him, i knew my mum would take great care of him but it didnt make leaving him any easier.. they are one of the most important things in my life aswell as my family and boyfriend obv.. if i had nobody to look after them then i wouldn't be able to go on holidays and stuff, but thats something that I'm well aware of, my mum can't go away because of the dog unless me or my sister are here, but shes not been away since we got her 4 1/2 years ago.

I take my Merlin to Reading Guinea Pig Rescue where the lovely Karen takes care of him and Merls gets a break from me!
The feeling of peace of mind is amazing. He gets cuddles and lovely baths and I know that he is in the best possible place should he not feel very well
