I have the feeling that I have been over feeding my piggies so I was just wondering what you feed them and how much please?

Thanks for that link. I had read it already and was just interested in what everyone else does. I am looking at ways to save money on my food budget too as we are feeling the pinch at the moment and was just thinking, how does everyone else do it?

My three get a small dish of pellets each morning (which they don't usually finish) and have access to hay (a mixture of timothy/meadow/orchard grass/readigrass) usually in a hanging 'hay ball' and a handful left by their dish too

The get about two and a half good handfuls of mixed veg each evening, (but are getting veggies tid-bits throughout the day too whilst I'm at home! ") )

Mine have unlimited hay in a big crate. I buy organic hay directly from a farmer and it's so cheap I feel embaressed every time I pay him. I have an organic veggie subscription and the pigs share that with me, then I buy some more to get more variety. Now over Christmas I've been getting curly kale (a christmas veggie here). In total they get a loosely packed cupful a day of veggies each. The only thing I weigh carefully are the veggies I depend on for vit C. They get a few tablespoons of Cavy Cuisine a few times a week because they love it and I think I won't hurt them to eat some pellets for a supplement :)

I buy basic range veg and veg that is in action - actually, I find it cheaper to have more piggies, as I can use up packs much better! Basic tomatoes, I ripen on the windowsill.

You could buy some wild bird seed, place that on top of a bit of compost in trays, moisten, cover with clingfilm until sprouting (keep moist, but not damp!) and then let it grow on outside over the winter - by Easter time you'll have some nice fresh green for the piggies, which you can cut and let grow back a few times until the grass is really growing! If you stagger the sowing by a week each, you can have a nice succession!

Same goes with cut-and- come lettuce, which you can grow indoors on a windowsill all year round. In summer, I have my fresh herb pots outside, but right now, I buy the occasional herb pot from the supermarket for my piggies - they keep much longer than cut herbs!

If you have access to a market, you can always ask for cut-off cabbage leaves and carrot greens - you will get those for free!

mine get a bowl of dried food and a bowl of fresh veg twice a day, quite often i find reduced veggies if i go to the co-op later on.to cut costs you could buy a cheaper dried food mix and mix it in with gerty or whatever you use, they probably wouldnt notice the difference. do you have a local greengrocers?you could ask them if they wouldnt mind saving old veg,cut off bits, leaves etc for your rescue.also for hay,the lovely Mrs M on here gets me some cheap hay from the liveries, see if theres anywhere like that near you,or a farm.

Mine get their pellet dry mix and their greens. At the moment due to lack of space I buy the big bags of hay but will be swapping to a half bale off a farm nearby once weathers better and Ive sorted storage space.

I tend to feed greens in the morning before work and then remove any un eaten greens and replace with some more for overnight. They get treats in the day If I'm in or Mum will take bits out in the day.

If you have an Aldi or Lidl their vege is cheap.

I sometimes go to Birmingham vege market or other market stalls and greengrocers and ask for cauli leaves and sweetcorn husks and get so much I often hand some back for someone else - its all free - best times for greengrocers are in the morning before they empty the bins.

In summer I go off for a walk and collect grass/dandelion leaves (but have to introduce that gradually as Its rich foods)
