I use a cat litter tray, newspaper, cat litter then hay on top....

Just wondering what everyone else uses as thinking of ditching the cat litter for maybe puppy pads...

I just use the same as the rest of the cage. Puppy pads with woodshavings or Megazorb on top, then a layer of hay then better quality hay in a pile to eat.

Cat litter tray and a small dog/cat bed lined with newspaper and filled with hay. Not sure if they sleep in their dinner or eat their bed. They love to curl up in it as well as dig and burrow and generally throw it around. I tried puppy pads but they just eat them, can only use those under vet bed where they are weighted down and hidden!

I use Back to Nature small animal litter in two corner trays with hay on top.

Back to nature is brill but I also used the paper cat little called Biocatolet.

Newspaper, shavings then hay. But sometimes I use Back to Nature and it's great. At the moment I have a large bag of shavings to use up.

I currently use the Biocatolet which is great - just expensive at £11.99 /bag and I use about 2 bags a month .... just trying to cut a few costs and it can't be the veggies !

Hate changing stuff that works well but always on the look out for alternatives... ...

i use megazorb with meadow hay on top.change bedding every other day, replace hay daily.
Megazorb looks like a great option - where would you recommend buying it from ? just saw 85 litres for £10 !

Try B&M's wooden pelleted catlitter maybe @artcasper; 30L for around £5.50? I've found using wooden pellets less smelly than Megazorb. What I do regardless of which I use is put newspaper down with substrate over it and then lay some anti-slip matting over the substrate. I find this set up has a number of advantages:
  1. Urine goes through the holes where it is absorbed by the substrate
  2. Poo and uneaten hay is easy to dispose of (and doesn't get mixed in with the substrate as much); just lift the matting and shake off in bin
  3. Much more gentle on feet (for cat litter), doesn't go all over the cage or get tangled up in fur (Megazorb)
Every 3-4 days when the fleece is changed, I stir up the substrate so there aren't clumps or bits of sawdust concentrated in the corners where they like to pee. With this set-up, each load of Megazorb lasts around two weeks and the cat litter lasts between 4-6 weeks (in a 2x1 hay kitchen, halve times for litter boxes); I go through so much less substrate! Any matting with holes small enough that your pig's feet don't get caught would work (Envirotiles, maybe).

I use cat litter trays with newspaper, then pine cat litter (absorbs odours and wee, safe for small animals) and then hay on top. The hay trays are their favourite place!

I use Aubiose . I advise anyone who lives near a pet supplies or equine supplies to enquire how much hemp based bedding costs ( any brands that don't have scents / deodorisers added ) . If you can get these without the delivery cost of Internet shopping, they can be very cost effective .

I use newspaper, hemparade (hemp bedding from zooplus) and loads of hay. They have a 32litre underbed storage box and make lovely little tunnels in their hay. I take out the wet patches every morning and sweep out the rest of the cage, shaking out the fleece and checking for wet patches.

ooo i will have a look for that cat litter... certainly a cheaper option than the one i use at the moment - but what if they eat it ? I know the Biocatalet one is safe as its made from paper .....

paperlit is similar to biocat, and back to nature,it is on line and delivered to your door,no delivery charge, comes in small bags so easy to store.finacard website.best to use this substrate without newspaper or puppypads.megasorb from horse suppies is £6.70 for 85 litres, best to put in a litter tray without newspaper, absorbs wee well.i have 6 long haired piggies and in my experience have not seen any in there fur.Aubiose is excelent as well,i would use newspaper with this,as leaves stains on litter trays .it really is down to personal preference and budget.
