I recently got 2 rescue pigs and I'm wondering what you all use in the hay tray under the hay? I've got a small bag of carefresh I'm currently using, but they're going through it really fast as I clean the tray out daily.

Is there a better option? They do most of their toileting in the tray, so it needs a lot of cleaning!

I don’t use hay trays as mine live in a hutch so the whole thing is pretty much one big hay tray, but as an absorbent under layer I use either aubiose, shavings and at the moment I’m trying out megazorb

If you’re looking for something similar to carefresh, Fitch recycled paper bedding is quite similar and much cheaper :) we just switched over to that for our main bedding and it’s super absorbent!

Thanks, they like to dig under the hay so they end up partly under the bedding instead of on top! So I think I want something they're less likely to push out of the way

This is what it looks like, it’s quite soft and you can press it down like carefresh :)

Sorry, but what is aubiose? Thanks!

Aubiose Ltd | The Natural Alternative Horse bedding, the original hemp bedding

I get it from my local equine supplier ...It's much more cost effective as delivery can be quite expensive if you buy it online

I put puppy pads down first and then hay.

Puppy pads, a thin layer of sawdust/megazorb and then hay. None of mine have ever chewed puppy pads as long as the edges are tucked down

Also, newspaper works as well, but I think puppy pads absorb things more. If you go to a Wilko then they have cheap and good quality puppy pads.

If you use newspaper...

I stopped after I put a panicked post on here. Jenny’s nose looked blue. Heart piggy was suggested. I took her to the vet and paid forty quid for them to wipe her nose with a wet wipe and declare it newsprint...

Personally, I also used nothing when I had one. It was so much easier to just empty the old hay and poos into a bin and then wash it in a sink with a cloth. But eventually, I just switched to a hay rack as it makes less mess in their hutch and less cleaning for me!
