What is a normal amount of scratching?

I see our two new pigs having a bit of a scratch several times a day ... they will be having a run around, stop, have a scratch and then continue on playing. Is this cause for concern or normal piggie behaviour?

This is all new to me ... and you all have been fantastic in providing great answers to my many questions!

There is always a little bit of scratching going on. However, if it increases in intensity and frequency or if there are bald patches appearing, you need to check!

Have your piggies come from an outside hutch indoors? Then it can be just the drier air, and a soothing bath can help.

If it is a bug it can be either mites (slightly greyish scales and developing irregular bald patches, guinea pig squirms when you gently rub the area), static lice (small black dots) or running lice (little white crawly things).

Or it can be ringworm (small bald patches, often in the face or by the ears) or another form of fungus. If in doubt check with your vet.

Ask your closest piggy rescue which vet they're using, so you will get an experienced one - that will save you a lot of trouble! I prefer to take mine to the vets, if I'm sure they have a problem. That way they get proper treatment straight away.

Also have a look at this website: http://www.guinealynx.info/medical.html

It won't hurt to know the signs, anyway.

Hopefully, there is nothing wrong with your piggies.
All the best
Vicky
