Hello, everybody! This morning I got a note from a friend saying that unfortunately her guinea pig passed away after 7 years. Is 7 years a record of some sort? My sister says the one she had lived to be 5. In two months I will have had Salvatore for three years.

I have known some live to over 10. My oldest so far was Terk who died at just over 7.

Bingo passed away a few weeks ago at the age of 7 years and 4 months (ish). Although Bingo's first cagemate, Frisky, died when she was just 3, so it really varies sometimes.

My Redemption over there in the avatar only made it to 2 years +/- because he got a gangrenous infection of the foot that would not heal, so the vet and I decided not to prolong the situation.

Ludwig and Gilbert I got in 2010. Ludwig passed away in June 2013 and Gilbert January 2014. I'm not sure what their exact ages were. So I think they were between 2-3 years old. They are my first piggies so technically my oldest.

Romano I still have at the moment I got in 2011 and he's still going strong.

But my brothers pet guinea pig lived for a good 8-9 years.

All of mine got to around 4. Although I've known many live to about 7.

Stanley, Barty and Bella were nearly 6 when they died. Angel is nearly 6, Lola is nearly 4 and Rebel is 3 on Tuesday. ;)

Wow! I remember when you got Salvatore - my eldest 2 ladies will be 5 in December

Our oldest piggy lived to nearly 10 years old, but that is rather rare. 4-7 years old seems to be average for a healthy piggy.
The oldest ever documented piggy has just passed away earlier this year in Australia. He lived to an amazing 17 years old!

Yes! Sal's "gotcha" day is coming up very soon.

Is there anything different or special that was done for that guinea pig? In feeding Sal I try for the best, and I have him in a very large cage that always stays temperate. I took him to the vet in St. Louis after Redemption was PTS to get him a baseline examination and to show the vet that what I said was true, that they were treated the same way and lived the same way, and the vet was a little surprised at Sal's robust appearance.

My oldest free range, Blacky lived until she was 8. We knew how old she was as she was born to our first piggy, who was pregnant when we got her. She was a shy little thing, but being free range she did not get handled much, as she had some hard floor, her claws were kept trim. She outlived her 2 brothers, Rusty and Patch.

Furbag was my very first guinea pig and the longest lived. I was 7 when I got her and she lived until she was 7. She was an absolute legend and put all of her cage-mates firmly in their place!

With most of my pigs I have never known how old they were when I got them. So very difficult to say how long they lived. I realised the other day that Pedro & Panda have been with me now for over two years, and the rescue thought they were at least a year old when I homed them (they could be older still) so they are now middle aged.

Unfortunately none of my previous pigs have lived beyond age 4. My current guineas are all less than a year old at the moment :)

I've lost pigs at all ages but one of my grumpy girls lived to 8.
