hey,
basically i have an underweight older piggie that i am trying to bulk up a bit. shes been losing weight gradually and obviously we've taken her to the vets but after several visits we still cant work out whats wrong with her (her teeth seem fine and her general health and liveliness is fine). She is quite a fussy eater (only likes certain veg) but does eat plenty of hay and nuggets and is currently on critical care to get her weight up. Anyway on our last visit to the vet, we were given some metacam to see if perhaps it was down to sore teeth and she absolutely loves the taste of it (literally eats the sringe trying to get more of it) in contrast to the critical care which she hates and which is a battle to get down her, and i was wondering if anyone knew what is in metacam which makes it taste so nice to guinea pigs? so i could possibly add it to her food/critical care to make her want to eat more?

Thanks very much!

I'm not sure, its sweet in taste, supposed to be like honey in taste. Have a look on the packaging and it may tell you? Sorry not a lot of help here. You could in the short term add baby food (fruit varities) into critical care to help her to eat it. But this isnt great in the long term as its high in natural sugars.

I can't say I've tried it but I've heard it tastes of honey as well. I've got one pig, Spike who loves it he would wrestle the syringe off me to get every last drop!

It's very sweet, that's what the vet said. It does remind me of honey when I smell it so it may be that.
Esme loves it that much that when i was drawing it up into the syringe on the last day of her having it, that the little minx went to the bottle and started licking the spout . Luckily there was nothing left in the bottle, and i realised soon enough to move it away. I think i have an 'addict' rolleyes piggy!

Thanks for the replies guys :) i did try her on some porridge oats today and she did have a little nibble on them. I know you shouldnt really give piggies honey but do you reckon maybe adding some to her food would encourage her to eat a little more?
haha i think i have an 'addict' piggy too!
thanks :)

Rosie Josie - your circumstances sound exactly the same as mine. I have an elderly sow, lovely tame, bright sprightly little cutie. She has lost a lot of weight, the vet put her on metacam long term as she has arthritic feet. Like you, I have been trying to bulk her up with Critical Care, and because she seemed to be doing so well, I cut back on the metacam, as I thought it wasn't needed so often (twice a day). However, since cutting down on the metacam her appetite has diminished, picking at salads, hardly eating her Oxbow dry food, so I think that she is probably in pain with her feet. So today I have restarted her on the metacam twice daily, and am stuffing her with the Critical Care on a more regular basis. I have, on occasion, added some fruit baby food to make the C C taste more palatable, but she got the runs. So I had to stop it. She has lost 100g of weight over the last 3 wks, so I am on a mission to stuff her up again. My daughter calls her the Foie Gras Guinea !

hehe i think my Tammy is turning into a foie gras piggy too, shes getting very sulky at being forcefed (and has just done a big wee on me to prove her point!:{), but it does seem to be working at least :) i want her nice and rounded like my other pigwigs :) i might try her with a little baby food if the vet visit on saturday shows no improvement.
hope you piggy puts on some weight too -c
