hello everyone,
I'm new to this forum, and i brought two guinea pigs scooby and ****gy the weekend. when i went to pick them from the pet shop i coudnt have one of them because he had dry skin on him and they didnt know what it was. so we picked another one, and yesterday i noticed hes got a big circle of dry skin which is raised and scabby and hard, i though it may have been a bite, but theres no dry blood round it, ive gotta take him back to the pet shop later, but any advice would be good, as i dont want to swap him, i love him to bits already, hes only eight weeks old! gemx:{
 
He could have a fungal condition or mites - I will move this to the Health and Illness board so your query will get seen. http://www.gorgeousguineas.com/indentification.html is a good page for identifying and the whole website holds really good info on skin conditions. If it IS fungal or mites, both are easily treated, but must be treated soon as they can cause major problems and even death if left untreated.
 
does sound more like fungal, possibly ringworm as this apears in round circles of dry skin and scabs, needs treating ASAP and can be passed to humans so take every procaution, wash your clothes after youve handled them.

Why have you got to take them back to the pet shop? If I were you I;d see if you can get them to pay yourve vets bill for the treatment

when i got Abby, they told me i had 15 days for whatever treatment the guinea needed adn they would pay for it. After that time phrame it was up to me to pay
 
Definitely speak to the pet shop and make sure they pay for any treatment that your guinea pigs need, don't delay and please get them to the vets for a check up as soon as you can. When I got my guinea pigs they had mites so I spoke to the pet shop and they paid the bill no problem, that's the least they can do.

Welcome to the forum. :)

I am hoping you've not already taken the pig back to the shop - if you haven't, then please don't! Pet shops can be rather crafty about the way they handle such cases and it can get quite complicated in some regards. Your best bet is certainly to find a suitable vet, get the appropriate treatment which you can fully oversee, and then present the bill to the shop.
 
hya there everyone, thankyou for your advice, its took me two days to find my question, and the comments to it on here- I'm useless! unfortanatley i went into a panic on tuesday because they were both just sitting in there hutch and not really moving! i took them back to the pet shop and it was ringworm. they told me i shouldnt really take them back to treat them because i have an eighteen monlth old and a four year old, and they could catch it. so i left them there, they are being treated in the back, with cannisten and something beginning with b? they told me i can wait for them, or get some more after ive bleached out the hutch and everything, but in the next few weeks they will have grown so much, and my children will have missed out on it. I am in a real dillema, i only had them 48 hrs but i was crying my heart out in the shop, and i felt really bad! what would you do?
 
I have to admit i would be concerned about taking piggies from that shop
but i know how fast we bond with our piggies and i could not part with my Bridget when we found he was a little boy and not what we asked for.

only you can make that descission but if i were in your shoes i think my descission would not pe a popular one

trouble is i have a logical mind and often the logical solution is not the one you want

i am sure thats no help at all but wish you well with whatever you decide
 
my daughter has had ring worm and it cleared after 4 days so i dont think it would be any longer for a piggie if you wanted to wait i know piggies and humans are different
 
The problem with any fungal infection is that the clinical signs clear within a few days. However the fungus remains active for a long time, hence the reason why treatment carries on for a few weeks.
Many people stop the treatment too soon and then wonder why the condtion keeps returning.

I had wondered where the name Bridge had come from- now all is clear!
 
i think I'm going to go with my logical side then, and have some others, ive bleached the hutch out this afternoon and its drying in the sun. the pet shop have got another batch in tomorrow, and i have first choice before they even go on the shop floor. everybody please dont think I'm just giving the others up lightly, because I'm not, its all ive been able to think about! thanks for all the advice. gemx
