A Comprehensive Hay Guide for Guinea Pigs (incl. providers in several countries)
We usually have both types on the go at the same time: a softer meadow hay mix in the bedrooms and stalky hay in the open.
The bedding hay is a pretty cheap version (Pets at Home meadow and timothy mix) but the stalky hay is a few pounds more. It's sometimes referred to as 'feeding hay' which is confusing as they eat all the hay (we don't use straw because it's too pointy and can cause injuries). I tried the Burgess excel long stemmed feeding hay "for rabbits" (again confusing, as rabbits and guineas eat the same hay but rabbits' eyes are higher up and pointy hay risks hay poke in the piggy eyes!) Mine liked this a lot but they don't really care about the long-stemmed aspect. Louise prefers the softer thinner strands and you can see her nosing through to find them. George likes a big tough one and you can hear him crunching from the other room! I recently coughed up for a bag 3 times the price of normal thinking it must be super tasty but they weren't any more bothered. We don't have the storage space for big boxes but there's a plastic dustbin outside with everything in.
