Hi, I'm new to the site so not sure how to ask different questions with out creating a thousand different threads (if their is a way) can somebody please tell me what is the safest treatment that you can get from a pet shop, or does it have to be prescribed from a vets, for treating mites on guinea pigs, I need to know asap as 3 of our 5 guinea pigs look like they have mites, 2 of which are losing weight at an incredible speed and the other is losing weight around her middle but has scabs and flaky skin tia

Probably best to get them vet checked anyway if there is sudden weight loss, to rule out any other underlying health issues.

Please have them seen by a vet as soon as possible! this kind of weight loss is not not normal and ther could be more going on than just mites!
Your vet can also decide whether you are dealing with a fungal infection or mites. Scabs and flaky skin go for both issues, but they require different treatment. The outbreak may also reflect an underlying issue, which only a vet can find.
THIS IS SERIOUS AND NO LONGER A DO IT YOURSELF CASE!

Please step in asap with syringe feeding and watering the weight loss girls. Until you can get hold of recovery foods, you can use mushed up pellets in an emergency, but you need to step in with syringe feed as soon as a piggy is losing more than 50g and you also need to have a piggy seen by a vet whenever this happens. The longer you wait the more likely it is that the guts slow down and finally go into stasis (stop working).
Weigh once daily to keep an eye on the food intake. Just watching your piggies eat veg is not enough. Around 80% or more of the daily food intake should be hay, and you cannot control that. cheap kitchen scales from a supermarket are sufficient.
SYRINGE FEEDING CANNOT REPLACE A VET VISIT!
Here is our illustrated step-by-step syringing guide which tells you exactly how to go about it, how often and how much to feed and to prepare the syringe tip to get pellets mush through. You can get a 1 ml syringe (without needles) from any pharmacy. Complete Syringe Feeding Guide
