So my guinea pig Farley was seen having this white paste stuff stuck to his fur near his bottom. I learned it was caused from too much calcium. Should I be worried and take him to the vet? Will it go away on its own? I’m planning on giving him and his brother less veggie for dinner. Thank you!

Hi and welcome to the Forum.

Maybe you could start by giving us an idea of what your boys eat on a daily basis.
Certain veggies can be high in calcium and cause problems, so if you let us know what you are already feeding we can help advise you.

But in all honesty I have never heard of a 'calcium paste' sticking to the fur of a guinea pig.
Usually excess calcium is seen as a powdery white patch where your guinea pig has had a pee.

Is the paste hard and doesn't wipe off?
In this case it might actually be boar glue, which is caused by something else entirely :D

Thank you. We were able to get the paste off. For breakfast they get pellets and hay. Sometimes a very small amount of veggie. I feed them twice a day, and they get unlimited hay. At night they get a salad, which I noticed in recent events that I have been feeding them too much for dinner. Throughout the day they might get a small snack. What is this Boar Glue, and why is it caused? Also I will add that It was hard to get off.

Hi!

If you are worried about a too high calcium intake, please be aware that most calcium comes in pellets and with the water and not necessarily with veg. It is always necessary to look at the overall food intake and not just at one food group.

Just going on your description, your guess is as good ours as we haven't got anything we can verify your guess by.
If in doubt, please have your boy vet checked. A one or twice yearly check up is recommended, anyway.

Ok thank you so much. I believe that is what it is after some more research. These are my first boy piggies, so thanks for the info.
