Just got my baby piggy out and she has that near her bum. It looks like a scab

Please have him checked for fungal (more likely than mange mites), but we cannot tell you which just from a picture. They require different treatment. Please do not treat on spec with low-dosed broad spectrum stuff from a pet shop.

I will be taking her to the vets tomorrow. Thank you

Or possibly Monday if they aren't open, could she wait until Monday or do I need to get an emergency appointment? Thanks

If it is fungal, here are our tips re. hygiene. they basically apply for mange mites, too. You need to treat all piggies in direct or indirect contact at least twice. Ringworm is the most aggressive and infective form of a fungal infection, but there are others, too.

Thank you very much @Wiebke Would you say she needs an emergency appointment if they aren't open tomorrow? And if they not is there anything I can do before I take her. I have georgeous guineas soothing cream. I check her daily I can't believe I have only just spotted it, I feel so guilty

Also she has 3 cagemates, should I take all four to the vets?

Soonest they could get me in was Wednesday unfortunately, however, I am now wondering whether to separate her just as she gets stressed out on her own. Or to separate into two pairs

I wouldn't separate unless there is real good reason to. I am treating Daisy for ringworm and shes separated because I go on holiday on Thursday and it would just be my luck for the other 3 to come down with it. When I've dealt with mites and lice before I have kept them all together and just treated all of them with ivermectin drops

I've decided to separate into 2 pairs until she is wel enough. They will be in a 2 tier cage so they will be able to smell each other still. If for any reason they won't bond back as a four we could keep as 2 pairs anyway

Do you think that is the best idea or keep as a quad?

You know your piggies best, I'm really hoping Daisy can bond back in with the trio really easily but I have dealt with difficult bondings before and like you I have the option to separate into two pairs as well

@Wiebke I have taken her to the vets they are unsure whether it's fungal / ringworm or bacterial but have said to just treat dolly and not the piggies she was with. Is this normal?

Personally I'd treat all the piggies just in case - it's really easy to transfer mites or fungus from piggy to piggy on clothes, brushes, toys etc! Don't forget, ringworm is zoonotic so humans can catch it too - gloves might be best just in case! :)

What treatment has she been given?

When we treated Eddi for mites (Xeno), we treated all of the piggies.
When we treated Eddi for localised fungal we only treated him, however we did culture it to rule out ringworm.

She gave me suroplan and itrafungol. She said she doesn't think it's ringworm but either a fungal or bacterial infection but if in the unlikely case it is in fact ringworm these will work too

Her patch looks so much better just after one round of medicine. I did it this morning and now the patch looks much better

She is looking better each time I see her. I have been checking the others and no signs that they have got it.

Dolly is getting much better, she had a few scabs on her nose which has completely gone and hair is regrowing on her nose and she has started to grow hair on her bold patch. I am treating her still, should I be?

What did the vet recommend?
From memory we treated for fungal for a full 14 days - well after all signs of infection had gone.

Yeah that's what the vet said I will treat for a full 14 days

Dolly keeps cleaning the surolan off her nose, will ingesting it be a problem for her? And will having it applied for a few seconds actually have any effect?

Just thought I'd update the page in case anyone is in the same situation as I was. Dolly is all better and her fur has grown back.

Awesome news! I've had an outbreak of fungal but touch wood seem to be on top of it now

The medication I used worked so well! She looked totally clear about 3-4 days after first dose of treating. Obviously I carried on treating for 14 days

Yes I noticed that with surolan but then when I got home from holiday and noticed two more had it I decided to treat all of them to imaverol dips to stop it circling round. I panicked when I first found it, silly pigs keep throwing new illnesses at me that I haven't had to deal with before

Ahh damn that's really unlucky! Hope they are better soon! I think I was lucky and only Dolly got infected the other 3 have not got it.

I'm sure it'll clear up soon :)

They all look clear already. Daisy has hair nearly the same length as her normal hair where the bald patch was. Donalds bald patches are increasingly harder to find and even little Lily's nose is looking better
