I seem to have found myself arguing with a Facebook group full of breeders on why they shouldn't all be feeding their guinea pigs on rabbit food mixes. And how it's not ok just because you have 100+ guinea pigs and you've 'always done it'. Grrrr!

Some people are morons and it is just better to avoid them.

Groups of breeders seem to go into a pack mentality haha!

I know some really nice breeders and although we may not agree on sizes for cages or feed, we agree to disagree which is nice. But i guess it’s like all people they’ll fight their corner wether the are right or wrong and when theres more than one person who thinks one thing it just turns into chaos, one of the ultimate reasons i hate facebook! Arguments everywhere.

Why are they feeding them on rabbit food mixes? Or did they give not real reason? It just seems such a bizarre thing to do when there are so many commercially available guinea pig foods - a bit like feeding your dog cat food!

But I wouldn't bother arguing with people on the internet, by all means voice you opinion but don't engage in arguments. :)

There is no point arguing with them as they gang up and bully. I see it a lot of facebook, why I hate the site, only go on to keep in touch with family etc....

I agree, you can't win, they'll just get personal :)

Nature of the internet.

i completely agree people are in the breeding business only for the money, the wellbeing of the little ones is last thing on the breeders mind, i have issues with the breeders the pet shop uses as the animals come in with all sorts of illnesses, my little salt died due to being 200g to small, the pet shop asked me to take him home as they knew i wis good with gps but he had no chance, i took him to a gp vet and he basicly told me that he looked like a gp from the outside but the inside was a mess, nothing had developed, this and the food issues feeding rabbit food is cheaper than gp food, so they op for the cheaper option so they have more money. i would never buy from a breeder!

They didn't give a reason know. Except that '90% of breeders feed this brand of rabbit food' so I'm guessing it's cheaper. I admit not all breeders are bad. The lady I board my guinea pigs with when I go on holiday is a breeder. She loves her pigs to bits and they are all very well cared for and fed top quality food.

It also bugs me how breeders say 'oh well I show and breed but I also work closely with rescue centres'. Well then surely you can see that you're adding to the problem that they are trying to deal with?

I'm thinking that's a totally made up statistic and just people getting defensive, it does seem daft. Also, breeders who breed to promote health and specific varieties are unlikely to make money off it it, the cost of rearing and upkeep would outweigh the value of babies. Of course there are other people who do breed for money producing large numbers of "substandard" guinea pigs.

For those who breed, show and rescue I suppose it's all an extension of the hobby of guinea pig keeping and there's an interest and investment involved in maintaining varieties and promoting the breeding of healthy guineas but also an interest in helping guineas in need. Without any formal breeding 'true' breeds would cease to exist and there would be no selection for health or temperament only what is produced by backyard breeders, rodent mills and mistakes.

I'm not saying I necessarily agree with that thinking but it may be a reason for it.

i know some people are selfish but the end of the day we all truly love guinea pigs and thats all that matters x
