Guinea-piggies-94

So far on this site people have been talking about different types of hay and how nice they are. What is the difference between them all as i just get normally dusted hay? Is dusted hay suitable and if not what could i use instead? Please suggest some things for me love hannah and patch x

if you mean dust free, yes its suitable if you mean it is dusty then no its not, the less dusty the better for guinea pigs and the best is timothy hay but thats expensive so i feed normal madow hay, if you have a farm shop near by they normally sell big bags for cheap..mine do and its lovely and green, and dust free O0

Like said above if it is dusty then no it's not very good.

I feed mine with timothy hay, exspensive but they love it, so I treat them too it :smitten:

mine have meadow hay because timothy hay is expensive - i did see timothy hay in my local pets at home cheap but was put off from buying it as it looked quite harsh and not very green - the meadow hay i get has got more green in it so i will stick with that

What's that hay like? Is it green or more of a browny colour? I'm running low on hay and could do with ordering some. Up until now I've bought £60 boxes from sphsupplies.co.uk, but I don't know how much longer I'll have the pigs so I'm not sure that it's worth buying another. If I can't find a good quality equivelant I'll have to, though.

It's sort of golden in colour, I guess. Not green like Oxbow. I've bought so many different types lately, I have quite a stockpile! I have alpine, green oat, Oxbow timothy, Dust Free Hay, and farm shop meadow, all in huge quantities! :o ;D

I use the same hay I feed my horse on, meadow hay nice, soft and green. I also use herbage and readi grass too. :)

I have just bought a huge bale for a shocking £2.75p :o :o :o I have been using p@h hay which is 4.49 for there so called bale, I find it dusty, bitty and yellow :( so I thought I would get a bale didnt realise how big it was :o we had a laugh getting it in the car did it eventually after putting some in bags. I also got a huge sack of megazorb at the same time and it all came to under £10 I usually spend about £12-15 on woodshavings and hay a p@h never again!

the big bale at p@h is awful i had that n chucked it away! i dont mind their timothy as the pigs eat that quite fast so they get it every other day as a treat alongside their meadow hay :)

I've just started doing small £2 bags of timothy hay so that if you cant afford big bags you can still get some as a treat!
I also stock herbal hay which smells delicious and orchards grass, alfalfa nibbles etc.

The timothy hay is really good for bunnies too as its quite long strands, Ive been sending out free samples to the rescues I support and they've all given it the O0

is any of the pampered piggies hay dust free?
people in my family are allergic to hay dust so it is very important. :D
plus, my piggies love burrowing in long hay. is it long or chopped? ?

If you need hay with no dust in it, I'd recommend the dust free hay in my link I posted on this thread earlier. O0

The timothy hay, alpine hay and herbal hays are not dusty and the timothy hay is quite long.

But is it the dust your allergic to or the hay in general?
I'm highly allergic to grass and hay and the timothy hay is so fresh that it does set my asthma off, even though its not dusty at all.

If you like I can send you a sample of each so you can see what is best for you? The herbal hay ive not had any reaction too but thats me!

please do email me if you want to try a bit of each.

hi
thank's! that would be great if i could try a bit of each? what is your e-mail?

Hi! I use timothy hay here in the U.S. I work at the pet store, so I get a huge discount, bringing a 10lbs bag to about $2.50. My piggies love it, but I think I'm also going to start feeding them alfalfa hay. all the stores I've been to have been out of it since I found out Luna was pregnant, so I'm afraid I've jipped her on her nutrients. :( :tickedoff:

Oxbow sell alfalfa hay called alfalfa nibbles and you can buy direct if your in the US I think the site is just www.oxbowhay.com
Although it may be a tad expensive if you normally get big discounts :(

I use dust free hay, they lik it but my buns don't so i can't afford different types of hay i need one they all lke but one bun is very fussy.

I tried the wilkonsons brand which some wwill eat but there not ecstatic over it, think i'm going to try Asda's wagg hay :)

I had a cheapy bale that they ended up getting lice from so I've binned it and learnt my lesson from buying the cheap stuff.
I've now got Excel Herbage, which is timothy hay with bits of dandelion and marigold in, which is also dust extracted, and they love it! Costs just over £3 for 1kg, but I think it's worth it.
