What made you get pigs?

Thanks, I have really enjoyed everyone's stories so far.

My wife got a female! guinea pig (we called her Lisa) & cage from a woman where my daughter worked who's little girl was allergic to her!

I read that they were best kept in pairs or groups so we took a trip to a local pet shop (I've since learnt on here that this is bad). We came home with a girl piggie who we originally called Maggie. 61 days later she gave birth to a little boy & girl. We thought that she must have been caught by her brother in the pet shop but then found that Lisa was a boy. We re-homed the 2 males & were left with Maggie now called Mother & her little girl we named Madam because she was quite a little madam

By now I was really into piggies & decided to expand when we took the grand-kids to a Maize Maze near York during the summer holidays. They had lots of pets too & were told that they sold them off in pairs at the end of the holidays so we put our names down for 2 who we picked up at the beginning of September 2011. They were named Minky & Mousey.

By the end of 2011 I had virtually taken over as their slave & just couldn't be without them. Unfortunately Madam crossed the Bridge prematurely in April & we were down to 3 but this was reversed when we re-homed Minnie from Bekki2308 about 6 weeks ago.

I don't think I'll ever be without piggies now, I just love 'them.

My first guinea pig, who I got when I was about 10, was called Harold and we got him to keep our rabbit company - this was 20+ years ago and it was just what everyone did. They actually lived really happily together; although, I wouldn't ever do it now. However, when we adopted another rabbit from my friend who was moving abroad, we got another piggy to keep him company and it quickly became clear that Gizmo was being bullied. So, we took her out and got her 3 new friends - Poppy, Phoebe and Sally. That is where my love affair with piggies began! In fact, I retrieved a box of stuff from my mum's attic a couple of weeks ago and found an old line-up photo of that first herd - it's now hanging in my shed!
Fast forward 23 years...and I still have piggies. :) I know that all my family and friends think that I'm slightly odd for being an adult who has rodents (I also have 3 gerbils), but I don't really care - I think that people with no pets are far weirder! ;)

I haven't got mine yet but what made me want some is they're so cute and can be kept outside during the summer which is perfect for me...

You've got such a fun time to come! They are fantastic. Any ideas when your taking the plunge?

I got mine from the dreaded p@h as a, bit of a whim :( then when i adopted my cat I learned about rescues and the forum and am rescue all the way now. Of my original pair i still have Caramel (4). I now can't imagine my life without them

I got my first piggies when I was 13 after weeks of begging my dad saying how can I become a vet when I have never had a pet of my own! so we got two piggies, which soon become 5 (the classic we thought we had 2 girls) but we kept all 3 and loved them so much. I had a few years when I didn't have any piggies (the time between my original 5 going to piggy heaven and being in my first 2 years at uni) but in my 3rd year at uni we got a house that has a lovely big garden so I rehomed 2 girls from my local RSPCA, a little while later I adopted a little neutered boy from the RSPCA to go with the girls. then I got 2 more girls from a different rescue then a while later i got a neutered boy to go with them! so the number has just crept up over the last year and a half. They are just so gorgeous with beautiful personalities and I am so lucky that my boyfriend who has never had a pig before is absolutely in love with them too! (refers to them as the kids!)

My brother got a guinea pig, and lost interest in about a day, but as i got older i became interested, then the collection just kept getting bigger... :)

i was living at my parents still and had two rabbits, bisc and matt, and really wanted some guinea pigs aswell. but i had no room there for them and my dad probably would have had a fit about it.. :))... so i decided to wait until me and o/h got our own place and use the bunnies hutch for the piggies, as the buns were coming to live inside. well, i couldn't face having piggies outside, i knew i would want them inside and because our house is tiny we said we would wait until we moved... then i saw ches up for adoption and that was that! :)) love a first sight and i knew he was meant for me. then he needed a wife of course, our beautiful maisie, and that's how we ended up with piggies. :)) and we're still all in the same small house, taken up by the pets and all their stuff! but we don't mind. :)

Its as simple as I wasn't allowed rabbits so got pigs :-) I now have rabbits and pigs plus many others

A friend of mine when I was younger had guinea pigs and I absolutely adored them. My family has only ever had cats and dogs and my parents weren't too keen on guinea pigs. I have worked in a pet store for over 5 years now (I know, don't kill me! I dislike it as much as you guys do!) and I've seen guinea pigs come and go, but when Sophie (my profile picture) arrived in the store it was completely different. She found me! Of course I was a new piggy slave and bought a pet store cage and whatnot, but then after countless hours on the internet researching everything I could about guinea pigs I soon got her a piggy companion and a spacious 2x4 C&C cage and now my little Sophie and Penny are spoiled rotten! But I wouldn't have it any other way and I can't wait to eventually add on to my piggy family. I'm a piggy slave for life!
