Probably a daft question. At the moment, need to keep occupied :)

I don't know much about the breeding/genetics side. Is it a faulty gene? A wrong thing to happen?

the weird thing is,Tia is white with black eyes and her hubby black and white with black eyes, now we've noticed that her new babies have dark red eyes :o

Same with Ratties second lot of babs, they all have red eyes.

The first lot - Guin and Cherry, Cherry has red eyes and Guin has dark black/brown eyes

theres something i like about dark red eyes,Angels got like pale pink eyes and theyre totally gorgeous, her babies have taken after her too,in more ways than one ::) 98) 98)

A funny thing with mine. The Mum and the Dad both have black eyes and all 3 babies had black eyes but one of them has like red middle, if you know what i mean? The dads brother has red eyes.

marley has red eyes charlie has black and both daughters started off with red but they are both now black marleys got sunlight problems with her red eyes though

When I got ronald and donald I was told they were brothers , well ronald has red eyes and donald has big brown eyes, can siblings have eyes like this or are they more likely to be father and son or two males paired? :) I have no idea I'm new to all this!

Siblings can have different eye colourings and markings. :)

O cheers thats cleared that little mystery up for me! ;)

Philip is the lone piggie here with deep garnet eyes. I usuaully forego considerations of Mendelian genetics and just enjoy the glorious differences in their markings! :smitten:

Melanin is a brown to black pigment that is a factor in skin colour. It is derived from an Amino Acid, through the action of an enzyme; if the enzyme is missing the guinea pig is an Albino. So yes genetics play a part. So I believe. :)

i think that an animals eyes are naturally red, and its fur white. if it happens that an animal is missing pigment in their fur, then the chances are that its eyes will be red, or vice versa. thats what i think, anyway. havent heard it anywhere else....

Although I honestly don't care whether their eyes are red or in fact green! :D

But is it something that can be rectified? You know what I mean :)

errmm, no, cos I have red/ginger piggies with red eyes, and white piggies with black/dark grey eyes :)

well 3 of lilys babies have red eyes

Ruby from her first litter

and 2 have red eyes from the 2nd litter

now lilly has black eyes and so dose max but i have noticed a fewtime when i have bening watching max outside in the run that whe nthe sun shines on his eyes it shins red in the middle

Max eyes sound as if they have a ruby cast. Nothing to worry about at all. O0

yes its all about genetics (I have been studying this in my biology alevel) I actually had a question about guinea pig breeding colours in my practice questions :)

genetics is interesteing but can get pretty complicated
