What should I do? Piggies need help?

Hi,
Today I went to a local garden centre and I saw they sold pets, so I went in to look at them and was horrified to see two beautiful Hymilayan Rex guinea pigs in a filthy cage! The water was brown from them pooing in it and their food was dusty and the bedding smelt strongly of urine. There was a youngish lad on the tills and I asked if he could change the piggie's water but he looked at me as if to say "why should I listen to a little 14 year old?!?" So I gave the guinea pigs one last stroke and said goodbye and left. I met my mum in teh carpark and told her about them, she didn't seem to bothered so we drove off, it's not until she realised I was crying how bad the condition was. She promised she would phone when we got home because I was going out with some friends but when I got back my mum said she had been on the phone to one of her friends and then totally forgotten about the whole situation, so I said we can't phone tomorrow cos it would sound odd if we said "I was at your shop yesterday and I saw that someone must of forgotten to change the guineapig's water...." so then mum said she would take me there again tomorrow so we can say something in persona dn actually make sure they did it.
Is this the right thing to do, If I was allowed I'd keep them but I don't think my mum wants two more guinea pigs :(
 
Of course it's the right thing to do :) I'd get mum to ask to speak to the manager.
 
And if your mum gets no joy with them I would go to the RSPCA.
 
okay, There didn't seem to eb anyone else at all in the shop, only me and the boy it's not the most used and nicest place.

I don't think the RSPCA woudl eb bothered, their hutch is big enougha dn they look perfectly healthy, it's just very dirty.

maybe I could Suggest water bottles?
 
But while they are in their care they have to be well cared for, it's neglect. They may have enough room but it sounds filthy and they aren't being cared for properley. Not cleaning them can cause infections too so I would defo take it higher if it was me. O0
 
okay, if they don't do anything (i'm not leaving until they do!) then we'll contact the RSPCA.

what do you mean where are they? like where is the shop?
 
I would have had to say something if i went in as i always do when i go into P@H if i see something not right.
I would have ended up bringing them home though as I love rex and 2 himi rex would have just been to much for me to leave behind

By buying them you would put another pair or more in the same conditions. In buying them your also saying that its ok to buy animals from there.

belper is where the two satin ladies came from that i posted about before, that went to perfectpiggies!

pm me the shop name please!

edit: just saw you said a garden centre, whereas the two satin ladies came from a proper pet shop. but still send me the name, me and my housemate will pay a visit too! >:D
 
I know people feel the RSPCA won't do anything but they have to log each complaint. You can do it incognito, they can't make you give your details.

We have a new pet shop open near us, mainly aquatics. As you can imagine with 100's of fish tanks downstairs the air upstairs where the rabbit & guinea pigs are housed is very damp & stale and I know of one pig bought from there that has been at the vets 3 times already in 4 weeks with many problems, one being respiratory.

I complained.They said they will pay a visit with advisory notes.
If enough people complain something will have to be done.

But worth a second visit tomorrow to see if things have been rectified. If still in same state then politely request they are guiven fresh water etc. if they do not do so I would contact RSPCA.
Last Year I ended up with a very young frightened pregnant sow which I rescued from a pet shop, couldn't bear to leave her there a moment longer.
 
also if you do go and nothing gets sorted, ill visit it on monday, and ill also make a complaint to rspca. they cant ignore it if more than one person complains!

could you PM which shop? I know there is a horrible one in Belper that has disgusting and dirty cages but there is also one that seems alot cleaner and the piggy I had from there (yeah I know, pet shop :( ) was very healthy :)

I always name certain piggies that capture my heart :) even if I don't get them, I have named them Bianco and Beau :) lol, I named another baby rex I saw today Mauvais (french for bad weather)
 
pm'd u the shop. the cages were clean where they came from and the shop owner was very nice and open to advice, but the cages were smallish tanks. ive seen much worse though
 
i thought it was waaay too cramped though. they had far too many pets in such a tiny shop. it was packed full of birds! which could be why it was dusty
