Hello fellow guinea lovers!
As of last night, I am a new mommy to a precious 3 week old baby boy named Harley!
The little guy has already stolen my heart :) But I have a quick question!
As soon as I put him in his cage last night, he went straight to a corner and just stayed there.
But as I was laying in bed this morning, I heard him what sounded like eating some of his food and drinking from the water bottle, so I'm assuming everything is okay and he's just getting used to his new surroundings.
So, should I just leave him in his cage for a while so he can get used to it? Or should I be handling him? I've read several different things so I just wanted to know what your opinions are!
Thanks! :)

Hi! Which country are you in? Please add your country, state (US/Aus) or general area to your details by clicking on your name on the dark green bar at the top. go to personal details/location. With members from all over the world, it makes it much easier for us to give you relevant advice, options and recommendations straight away.

Please give your freshly weaned baby that is missing his family terribly right now a hidey to feel safe in and a cuddly toy to snuggle into!

What Harley really needs is a same gender friend, preferably older than him, to give him the emotional support he desperately craves right now and to help socialise him. Here in Britain, we have got good rescues that will bond your little one with a suitable character compatible boar under expert supervision. You can look up our recommended rescues in our rescue locator: http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/pages/guinea-pig-rescue-locator/

Guinea pigs are not wired to live on their own and should have company of their kind.

I'm from the US!
And I got him from a breeder, but actually didn't get another because I couldn't afford a second one at the moment (i'm a broke college student LOL). Though I do plan on getting him a play mate in the future! Until then, how can I make him feel more comfortable? What kind of toy?

Welcome to the forum.

I have a boy on his own currently. I have given him a toy suitable for new born babies from a baby shop (nothing can come off ie eyes etc..) just make sure you keep an eye on it and remove if it gets chewed into a hole so he doesn't eat the stuffing. you could then replace stuffing with some thing safer and put back though. you could also make him a little bed to snuggle into if you fancied from fleece my boy sleeps in his bed he loves it.

Your boy really does need a friend though, mine will be having 2 or 3 very shortly :)

Ideally a soft adult guinea pig sized toy (about 8-10 in long) that you remove all dangerous parts of that he could chew and swallow. You can also make a cheap hut out of a cardboard box or even a hankie pegged to the bars of his cage. PS: How big is the cage?

Here are tips on how to settle in skittish new piggies. Give your little boy safe and snuggly body contact with you (under your pullover for example), but use only old vests as he may lose control over his bladder if he becomes too comfy.

I would also strongly advise to do your research first in the future before you get any more pets, especially if you are on very limited funds. Any pet that is to be kept properly is not quite cheap, and any mistakes or problems due to inadequate research can quickly become costly and often quite heart-breaking. :(

You will need to put aside some money each week in a "piggy bank" so you can afford vet and medication cost whenever needed. Vets are quite expensive in the US, so you'd be better prepared and not have to go through the agony of seeing your pet suffer or get into debt over it.

Please be careful when putting more than two boys together as Can be quite risky, duos work better

Briony, please be aware that boar trios and quartets are very unstable!

Sorry I should have been clearer, you know when you half think something and only write the other half:mal:

My boy has been neutered and after 6 week wait is up he is either going with my 2 girls or my three Dependant

No worries. I have high hopes for him. When I adopted him I was told he needs to be alone as doesn't get on with others and I just had to have him to give him a chance to have a friend. i needed to see if he will get on with my girls first before getting anymore.

If he doesn't like any of my groups I will go dating hopefully at a rescue and fingers crossed he will find someone.
