hya there, as i posted in the rainbow bridge section, i lost my piggy yesterday.it was awful as i had to have him put down. I'm just wandering what you all think about my piggy drizzle thats left on his own, he looks so lonely, or am i just imagining it? everytime i think about getting a mate for him i feel sick, I'm sooo not over punky, and i dont think i ever properly will be!to say I'm devestated is an understatement, but am i being selfish? i keep bursting into tears whenever i think about my poor punky! i am also terrified that my drizzle wont get on with someone new! id feel terrible if one of them got hurt? I'm so confused!gemxx

When Bailey was PTS I wanted to get a friend for Amber but I wanted to leave it for a while.
Even though Amber & Bailey weren't cage mates, their cages were next to each other and I noticed she had become withdrawn and wasn't wheeking anymore. I knew even though I wasn't ready for another guinea pig she was and needed one too so I got another after a week.

I felt like I was being disloyal to Bailey by getting another so soon but I knew Coco wasn't a replacement - noone could ever replace my Bailey Bum.

Are there any rescues near to you, they can help with pairing up piggies when the time comes.

hya thanks for youre reply,
i know if i get another one it wont be replacing punky cuz i miss him so much! but i cant help the way i feel, I'm so emotional anyway, i hate myself for being a big baby all the while, i wish it was a switch i could turn off, but ive always been like it! I'm not sure, i live in westbromwich, about half an hour from birmingham, who should i ask on here to give me any rescue places?

thanks again gemmaxx

I think that Bailey has hit the nail on the head. You're not replacing Punky at all.

Drizzle is probably missing Punky as much as you and would probably love some company again, expecially if they were close.

Some rescues may allow you to take Drizzle along and he can pick out a new pal. A new friend may be just what both of you need to help you as you mourn little Punky.

Good luck with whatever you decide and higs to you at this sad time x

It's been almost 2 months since Bailey was PTS and sometimes I still get tearful. The other day I found piccies of my baby bunny Tia who died nearly 5 years ago and started blubbing.
I'd be more concerned if you weren't upset about it, Punky was obviously much loved. I think the problem comes from people who don't understand piggies and say "it's only a guinea pig..." mallethead

Here is a list of rescues http://www.guineapigrehome.org.uk/gp/centres.asp or you could start a thread in the Rescue Centre Wanted section of the forum

It's so sad when you loose a piggy. I've been through it myself very recently. Cry and cry and have lots of cuddles with Drizzle.
It's really hard to think about getting another piggy at this time but you must do what's best for Drizzle and if he's showing signs of depression (all fluffed up is the most noticable sign I've found) then he really needs a friend.
I took Spike to a rescue to find a friend and he stayed there for 4 days so we could be sure they'd bonded. If you can find a local rescue who can do this it's the easiest way to be sure they'll get on. I did find it extra hard having no piggies in the house for 4 days but it was made even better to have 5 coming home!
I know it doesn't feel like it at the moment but it will get easier. I chose my favourite picture of Stripes and bought a nice frame so he's still with me.
Lots of love to you and Drizzle x

awwww i bet hes lonely and would love a new friend.

you know you shouldnt be so hard on yourself, what sort of world would it be if there werent people that loved their animals?

I have only just got to the stage where i can hold a conversation about my last dog Nancy who was my bestest friend in the whole world, and she died a year ago last May, but now i can talk about her as much as i want, i just finished my grieving period thats all.

Talking about my two guineas is a different matter tho because they are still raw.......8...i spent all day Saturday & some of Sunday on this forum commenting on things and sobbing ha ha ha i love my piggies so what! lol

I am glad that i loved my pigs, but at the same time i am happy that i can and will love more :)

Guinea pigs do mourn and you have to give them the space to pull back into themselves for a few days. but afterwards, they will be much happier for a new friend - the change is always amazing and so heartwarming.

The best way would be if you could find a rescue where you can take Drizzle to date some piggies and make her own choice of mate, even though you may feel you yourself are not ready yet. Don't try to force a connection and give it time for your own bond to grow. I had that problem after my big personality Minx died and Dizzy chose smooth variation of the red dutch theme (Minx was a gorgeous aby x)... But eventually I couldn't help but fall in love with young Llewelyn myself! I still miss Minx, even after another dozen piggies who I each love dearly.

I find that a new piggy won't take away from one you have lost, as each will build its own very own little nest in your heart. Every piggy has a different character and your bond will be different every time. Love is not something to be stored and closed away; it is there to be given on... When Dizzy died, I found it helped me sponsoring a couple of rescue pensioners in her memory.

PS: Do not overlook neutered boars as an alternative.

thankyou for all your kind words. ive been ringing rescues today, but they havent got anything, and all the others are to far away, there doesnt seem to be anything by where i live! it is ridiculous, i really would rather rehome one than go to a petshop, but will it matter how long i leave it?will he get used to being on his own, and be harder to bond him or what?gemzx

also, so if i had a neutered boar, he wouldnt have to be a baby then? oh this sounds promising.gemzx

I thought your piggies were male so a new male friend would not need to be neutered. Neutering a male guinea pig doesn't make any difference to his behaviour it is more like a human vasectomy (although poor little piggy loses his testicles) and renders him infertile. So if you pair two boars it makes no difference if one or both of them is neutered (or not).

I hope you find a nice friend for your poor little lonely piggy.

oh my god I'm so confused now, i went to pets at home yesterday evening to get drizzle a new indoor play pen and a couple of things so he could take his mind off his mate. i went up to the lady and said if i brought one of those baby boars and paired him up with mine blah blah blah.... and she said-dont do it, just dont do it, he will be grieving, extra stress blah blah blah, if youre going to do it, get him nuetured first!i came out of there in floods of tears. she was really nice but the way she said he will really grieve for his mate, and he has been bonded with him scince young and everything, i just got all emotional, i cried all the way home!

To be honest I would take whatever they say with a pinch of salt.

Neutering DOES NOT affect a boar's behaviour it only stops their ability to reproduce.

A rescue would be the best place to ask for advice on bonding two boars, they will have a lot more experience of it than someone who works at P@H.

Big hugs hun. Must have been hard to listen to the p@h woman talking about Drizzle grieving because you're still in that awful raw place yourself.
Lots of people on the forum have successful bondings of older boars and young ones (no neutering required). I hope you can find the right friend for Drizzle soon. xx

*Hugs*, am not surprised you were upset. I agree that she was not the best person to advise you and I hope you find the perfect friend when the time is right.

I just found this on gumtree, I'm not sure how far he is from you

HI I have a male unneutered ginger and white guinea pig who needs to be rehomed with another guinea pig. His brother has just had to be put down as he had several tumours. He is friendly but a little nervous and has never bitten or scratched. He has always been indoors but does go out on the grass in a run and could be acclimatised to living outside.
If you can provied him with the company he needs please contact me.
If may be possible for me to bring him to you to see if he gets on with your guinea pig/s
