I've noticed that once in a blue moon my piggies will smell something on my or my husband's hand and just run away and be terrified!

This is Bunker. He's very interactive and will come right up to me and let me pick him up. Twice now I came back from horseback riding and went to pet him before I took a shower. As soon as he got a whiff of my hand he took off like one of those acme cartoons, and wouldn't come near me until after I showered.

Bandit, my other piggy, had no problems with horse smell, but the other day I was holding him in a pouch and he was happily munching on some lettuce. Then my husband reached over and pet him on the head (all stuff Bandit is used to) and Bandit went so still for like 5 minutes I felt compelled to check if he was still breathing. My husband hadn't done anything out of the ordinary except for he had just handled a bath towel that he noticed was getting kind of mildewy smelling. Bunker had no issue with it though.

So this got my curious if there were common things that piggies don't like the smell of. What smells set off your piggies?

Timmy doesn't like the smell of coriander or banana. His cage mate Freddie doesn't mind when he runs away, there's more for him!

My piggies didn't like the smell of dried mint. First time they smelled it, they both ran away from it. 😂 I tried another time and they still ran away from it. In the end, I had to give the bag of dried mint away. I haven't tried them with fresh mint yet. Although as both hubby and I don't like it either, we'll never get it anyway. 😂

Smoke. In the summer we go to a cottage and there is often bonfire smells in the air and I don't know if they're afraid but they definitely pay attention and are very alert to the smoke smell in the air. I would imagine fear of fire is pretty ingrained in a lot of animals.

Basil. Ratter made it very clear from a very young age that she will not eat basil, or anything that has shared a container with the basil!
I haven’t tried her with it recently as it is high in calcium, perhaps in the summer (when I have access to a basil plant) I will see whether she has forgotten how much she hates it.
