Ok I've been thinking about this for a while and really would love more piggies as well as a hamster etc but I know its tough on OH as it would have to come out of his money as I am being made redundant shortly :(

So another option is to foster, now we have a secure garage in the garden which could be tidied up to provide plenty of space for many animals to be fostered while waiting on their forever home. I would be looking at fostering hamsters, guinea pigs and rabbits as thats only what I have experience of at the moment but other than space and making sure I have adequate cages/food and love etc what else so I need to consider?

I just want to make sure I'm fully prepared before contacting any local rescues

do you have easy transport to vets in needed? as some fosters have to give day to day care to possible poorly animals

I don't drive but my partner does, I also know of a vet in wigston which is half an hour walk or ten mins on bus. Public transport is good in my area but yes I hadn't thought about that at all so thank you

I had (when I had a guinea shelter) about 15 piggy’s, it was fun, now I only have 3 left.. and it's still (or even more) fun. So more animals doesn’t mean you have more fun.. Be happy with the animals you have, maybe one day a sweet little (extra) piggy will come on your way.

Bailey a huge thank you, the website and the other threads have been a huge help to me and I feel its definitely something I could offer

Oh I know, I already have buckets of fun with my two girls but to be honest I think I would do this more to help more animals and to help a local rescue than for extra "pets" as such. I just want to help as many needy animals as I can but I know I can't them all on myself :))

Well the verdict from the OH is that he thinks its a good idea too! I've had a friend offer her old two storey hutch/run and another friend offer her old hamster cage. I've also had an offer of a dwarf hamster cage from freecycle so this weekend I need to start making contact with local rescues to offer my help

That's great! I've heard you have to be extra careful when disinfecting hammy cages as wet tail is extremely infection if the previous hamster died of it.
Have fun fostering :)

Fab news xx>>>
Shame you're not closer as I have a 3' hutch that's no longer needed, not an ideal size but handy as a temp home.

Had to throw the rabbit's 2 storey hutch out at the weekend too but it was beyond repair - why chew the hutch when there's lovely chew toys for themrolleyes

Lol where's the fun in chewing the toys! My friend has offered her old 2 storey hutch suitable for guineas or rabbits. Another friend has offered her Syrian hamster cage and I've been offered a dwarf hamster cage through freecycle! It's a brilliant start and I'm going to have a lot of cleaning to do hehe

I fostered a ferret for a local rescue.....and he never went back! @)

Remember that its hard to let them go...but if you don't...then theres no room to foster more.

aww I'm really touched by how much people want to help, it kind of restores faith in humanity (well for someone who suffers depression both peoples kindness and my medication seems to) :))

I know it will be hard to let any animals go but hopefully I will be ok with that as they will be moving on healthy and happy to a new suitable and loving home
