Definitely something only to be resorted to when one must pair a male & female to spare them from singleton lives.
 
Good to have independent confirmation, citing US sources and links, that the advice on this forum is following pretty much the same lines! :)

My only point is that female spaying is a much more invasive and expensive operation, so it is undertaken much more rarely these day unless there is a medical indication for it and there are no longer any rescues in the UK with a sow spaying policy.
