hi ok this is long winded so i apologise in advance lol!
went to a garden center yesterday, and discovered they had a pet center so i said to hubby id have a mooch(sorry wander and a look!)
i fell head over heels in love with 2 boy piggies
when i asked about them the lady (who wasnt friendly or helpful!) said they werent for sale until monday and that i couldnt look (they were rather high up and only being 5foot 3 i struggled to see properly lol) closer or touch as they were not for sale yet which i said was fine i understood, one is a black white and ginger what looks to be an abby x who has the chubbiest face (kissable) and the other is a grey/brown short haired agouti(i think lol still learning!)
the lady says that they are 6 months old, each of them had been bought as a single boar from 2 different customers however the abby x is three times the size of the other one and the abby x had a healed scab at the bottom of his back the scab has dried and come off but obviously he still has a bald patch and now they are in together they want to sell them as a pair again thats fine
should i worry that i dont know thier background ?
not knowing why the owners sold them to the shop etc,am i over analysing the situation(i have a tendancie to do that lol!)
i really like these babies and would love to give them a secure forever home
any advice is gratefully recieved! thanks x x :{

Hi Janie,

well, I don't have all the experience that many on here do, when it comes to whether or not to buy from pet shops, or only rescue etc. My feeling is that if you have the facilities to offer them a lovely home, and they will fit in well with your existing set up then why not? If you have experience with piggies then you know how much commitment they will be. I suppose I would worry about them being both 6 months, even though they are very different sizes.. they may still decide they don't want to get along, and will you be able to deal with that? And I would keep them well away from your piggies, to make sure they don't pass along any parisites/infections.
:) I'm sure the others will have sage advice!

If they are of questionable health they shouldn't be selling them and I'd be wary that if you do you might have some immediate costs on your hands. If you can get them for free, great, but by paying for them they would just replace them with some more.

the lady said apart from the scab them "seem " to be healthy
and they are for "sale" they are £17.00 each but they want them to go as a pair so then £34.00,which is of no issue
i just totally fell in love but at the same time i have 8 piggies and am not willing to put thier health at jeopardy so am tied what will happen to theese boys if they are sold to some one else? what if they get bored or whatever and then they are passed back and forth i just cant bear that thought
thats why i couldnt go to a shelter because i be getting a mortgage to pay for the house next door so i could home all the piggies! lol x

i wouldnt support this place if possible, maybe you could give a home to a needy rescue pair instead, just if you buy these two its just making more room for more piggies that could possibly go to bad homes x

the thing is, there are loads of guineas in pet shops around the country, you can't buy them all to rescue them from their possible fate. first and foremost you must consider the health of your current piggies, if you don't have good quarantine space then thats your answer really.
As daftscotslass says, the garden centre will undoubtedly replace them with another pair next week, there are always pigs in pet shops and garden centres, and buying them does cause that trade to continue.
But the way I would look at it would be, do I have the facilities to protect my current pigs, do I have the space, time and money for these new pigs? And can I cope with the fact that the pigs will be replaced at the pet shop by another pair next week?
If yes, then go for it!

i'm glad someone's said this as i was about to put something along these lines.
this also sounds like a bit of an impulse buy because they're there and they're cute- have you thought about pigs who have maybe waited years for a good home, as opposed to these two who, while don't deserve a good home any less than a rescue pig, but will more than likely be snapped up straight away if you don't buy them?

I expect most of us have been in similar situations, I know I've fallen in love in a pet shop before rolleyes but as everyone else has said a) you're lining the pockets of the petshop owners and they'll just buy more 'stock' and b) it's not worth risking your own piggies if they're in questionable health.

I've had rescue pigs that have waited 6 months or more to find homes... if you really want more pigs then you'll find the right ones for you

i did get theese boys last tuesday, took them straight to my vet and as i thought they had parasite so vet treated with ivermectin (is tha how its spelt!) i have named them frankie and barney barney is the rex and frankie the abby x , barney was crawling but had a check today and looks to be clear
as i said previously about thier age and size my vet said that frankie is at least 14 months old if not nearer 18 months he is a fully grown boar
very nervous but loves a cuddle! barney is around 8 months old
barney i dont think has been handled at all as hes all teeth at the mo every time i get him out i get bitten! at first he was desperate to get down but now enjoys a cuddle for a few minites once hes up
these poor boys have obviously both been mistreated and it will take time and patience and lots of love will try and post pics tomorrow
thanks for all advice x
ps they are in quaretine for another 2 weeks
