Hi, I'm new to this forum and looking for some advise please. I recently bought 2 brothers and all was well unil 1 suddenly died, he had been wheeking and so on as usual and I'd only been with him a short time before with no signs of illness and then he was gone so I'm gutted, my other lad seems fine, had him checked over and all is ok. My question now is do i get him another male friend? A female is out. He seems fine, he was quiet the next day but is now pop corning, and talking, he has neer stopped eating and drinking and is getting as many cuddles as he will permit (he is only 11 weeks and gets restless quickly) what should I do?

Many thanks Saf

Welcome to the forum!

I am sad that you lost one of your boys so quickly!

As your remaining boy is still quite young, you have two options

- you could contact your nearest rescue for a male companion. If they let you come with your own or bond him for you, that would be best, as character is as important, if not more, than mere age; you'd probably better look for an adult boar who's past the hormonal phase between 4-12 months. You may not come home with the pig you would like best, but with a best (and lasting) friend for you boy! For rescue addresses look here: http://www.guineapigrehome.org.uk

- or you could have your boy neutered by an experienced vet and then bond him to a girl after six weeks. Cross gender pairings are usually very stable.

Good advice there! I wouldn't leave them on their own.

I just wanted to say what a shock to lose your guinea so suddenly. Hope you manage to find a lovely new friend for your remaining guinea pig.

Welcome to the forum, Saf. I am very sorry you lost one of your boys so suddenly, it is both sad and confusing when an apparently healthy guinea pig passes away without warning.

Vickyt has given you all the information you should need, but of course if you have any questions or would like help finding a friend for your remaining boar we can always help out further. There are a number of rescues and individual rescuers here who may be able to help - most of them are overflowing with boys needing homes, and they can give you excellent advise on boar pairings.
