hello everyone.

i lost my beautiful Rita yesterday. she would have been 4 on the 28th March. she had a tumor in her tummy and she gave up eating. in the end she wouldn't go on her own, so we had to make the decision to take her to the vets to help her along her way.

my other girl pickle is 3 and a half. as i knew a week ago that Rita wouldn't have long left i started looking at rescues. i have seen a guinea at the RSPCA middlesex. they have put me down for a home visit and they said they would call me this week to sort it out.

i just wondered what i should expect from a home visit. i spent ages cleaning the floors and doing the dusting on saturday to try and get ready. i just hope everything is going to be ok! my boyfriend said that i shouldn't worry, but i worry about everything!

Sorry to hear about Rita, it's so difficult to lose a piggie and making the decision to PTS is such a heartbreaking one to make.

It is lovely of you to think about getting little Pickle a friend, we have got all our rescue piggies from Walsall RSPCA and like you were nervous over the homecheck.
They are just looking to check what cage they will be homed in, checking it meets minimum size recomendation and making sure that the piggie will be well cared for and you know what to feed etc.... we were nervous about ours but the gentleman conducting it put us at ease. I'm sure you'll be absoultely fine. Good luck and let us know how you get on.

thanks,

i am just happy that i had taken Rita to the vets a week ago as i was worried about her and thats when they found the lump. they said they didn't know how long she had, so it meant that i made the most of the time that i had and i did everything i could.

i am just worried about Pickle being on her own. i have seen a girl piggy that is 4 years old in the rescue centre. i have been told that it is quite rare to get older piggies in rescues, so i am really hoping that everything is ok.

there are a few people interested in her! :)

Some rescues will do piggie dating also, so Pickle could pick herself a new friend. But I'm sure your homecheck with the RSPCA will go well.

A lovely lady who lives in France came to do my homecheck between christmas and new year (she used to live down the road many years ago and was back vissiting her mother for a few days )
She just asked me what excercise they would get ,what I would be feeding them, was i registered with a vet (turns out she had known my vet Cyril for years) - took photos and measurements of cages - had a cuppa and a cuddle (with piggy - not me ) - then went on her way - i think its basically to make sure you are not a breeder / after a takeaway for a python - nothing to worry about (although I also was cleaning the house for days in advance - tidiest its ever been :(|)

I had a home check with the RSPCA a while back. The lady who came round was very friendly, they're not coming to check that your house is spotless etc but that the guinea pig will be well cared for, that everything you have is suitable and you understand what they need on a day to day basis.

My piggies put on quite a spectacular show for the lady that visited us, they all wheeked SO loudly when she entered and then proceeded to try and just get out of their hutches when opened! She seemed to like watching them all bumble round whilst munching their greens. She looked at the cage that I was going to be housing the new piggy in and said hello to his new wife (he was already neutered!), I think she also had a nose at my runs and also asked to have a peek at my pond ha ha, people are drawn to the koi! If I remember rightly she stayed for a cup of tea and then said everything was great, hoped we were looking forward to getting the new guinea pig and any problems give the relevant people a call. It wasn't really a big deal!

thanks everyone.

i keep checking my emails and my phone to see if they have called yet! when i spoke to the RSPCA on friday they said that someone would be in touch this week.

its just frustrating that i don't know when yet! i told pickle last night that i would do everything i could to make sure she wasn't lonely.

she actually seemed quite calm when i got home yesterday. it must have been very stessful for her knowing that Rita was ill. animals really do amaze me at how much they pick up on :)

home visiting don't work weekends, so if you spoke to someone on Friday I would expect them to call you sometime this week. Homevisits can take up to 2 weeks, although they try to get them sorted in 7 days.
