After having lost a pup to a bad case of diarrhoea I want to get some items to keep just in case. I have ordered avipro plus. What else should I get for my piggie first aid kit?
I'd recommend critical care food and syringes. I have them in my piggy box. Also got spot on treatments, fungal shampoo, towels, some tubes of saline solution and a tea tree cream which is soothing and reduces itchiness .
I'm not sure what else you may need but this is what I have ready. Nothing though can stand in for a vet trip, which is why I have contacts for two of my local vets, a specialist who is a bit of a distance and the out-of-hours vets.
I have 1ml, 5ml, and 10ml syringes, vit C tablets, Probiotic. Personally I dont keep critical care, But I do keep some long life (as long as I can find) Pure fruit/veg baby food. I mix this into the pellet mush if they need syringing, they love it.
I also keep cotton buds, for gentle ear cleaning (my boys seem to get gross waxy ears) or gentle bathing of any wounds that should occur. Then I have shampoo, And a small fleece covered hot water bottle.
I'd say things like this, all opinion though:
- Critical care
- syringes
- Vitamin C tablets
- Ivermectin
- Shampoos
- Heat pad and bubble wrap (for wrapping very unwell pigs on the way to the vets)
- nail clippers
I couldn't agree more. When I first joined the forum, and like many others, I knew very little about guinea pigs in comparison to my knowledge base now, and thought the idea of a first aid box sounded a little ott. Well, I soon learnt that wasn't the case especially with aging pigs.
Whatever left over medicines I have, I keep. Naughty, but hey it's been worth it.
