I have a long haired piggy who hates being brushed.

Ive been using a wide toothed comb and she squeals at every tiny knot. Not even knots, just tiny tangles and she squeals!

Ive ended up just cutting most stuff out. Now she has started getting some small mats around the bum.

Can anyone recommend what type of brush I should be using? A comb, a bristle brush or something else?

Thanks

I use one of these :) [ame="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Boredom-Breaker-Options-Gentle-Slicker/dp/B003F6CSCO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1340031416&sr=8-1"]Boredom Breaker Options Mini Gentle Slicker: Amazon.co.uk: Kitchen & Home[/ame]

When combing always hold the fur near the roots next to the skin so you are not pulling it as you comb, this will help with the pulling so you won't be hurting her.. We always used a wide tooth comb with Pitch (the long haired girl in our avatar) We also kept her bum fur very very short.

This is what I use on my long haired girl too.

If she's getting matted around her back end, that's something that really needs addressing. I keep my girls hair quite short around the back end, she does the rest.

Are you confident in cutting her hair? If not, if you let us know where you are roughly, there may be a rescue or an experienced member who may be able to help.

Unfortunately I'm in Dublin so probably no one around.

I'm confident enough cutting her hair with scissors. I'm trying to keep her trimmed all over so its not dragging on the ground and I have been trimming her butt hair even shorter.
Theres just been 2 or 3 skinny matts, slightly under the butt, thats been a problem.

She just wont sit still bless her.

Well I'm not inexperienced and I'm coming to dublin next month, arrive Friday and fly back Saturday (work thing), so unless there is someone close by I could always call in.

Let me know if you need any help.

I use a pair of electric clippers on my long haired girl, with a guard so that I can set how long I want her hair

Not sure if I'd be confident with electric clippers, plus I dont have any.

Gave her another trim around the bum last night, and there were no more matts. Its not just the length though, its super thick too!

Ill carry on brushing her everyday and trim away if I need to.

Thanks for the offer lil, I'll let you know how we get on and if we need any hands on help :)

Another thought, is there anything natural I can rub through the hair to help smooth and detangle, like say olive oil? Obviously I dont want to put loads of stuff on it thats just gonna create a build up on the hair and make it harder to brush, but maybe even if I just oiled the comb slightly it would help it through?

One of my piggie is long haired and she squeals too - I feel so guilty! But it has to be done for their own health.

Well first of all I would ensure that the hair is nice and short, trimmed so that it doesn't get in her way. If there are any really big/thick lugs, just cut them. It's not worth the time, and pain she suffers trying to force it out - the hair will grow back. :)

I then use a normal hair comb (that you would use on yourself, except she has one especially for her), and similar to brushing your own her, hold it at the root and pull in the opposite direction against the tugs from the comb; as this prevents her from getting yanked so much.

I then use the same brush as Shuvvy said, to just quickly brush everywhere and make sure their is no little knots I have missed. However, I sometimes just use a baby brush if there are no knots, just a few hairs out of place, as this is much more efficient and time saving to me, and her.

Hope this helped - happy brushing! x

Wow - that looks so cute! I've thought about if anyone has ever clipped their piggie before, if it was even possible lol. Seeing it for real makes me want to do it even more haha! Don't think I'd have the nerve though :P x
