Hi everyone.
what type of cage/hutch set up do you have?and what do you use for bedding etc?...I have seen alot of people line their entire cage with fleece, which looks lovely, but is this realy suitable for Guineas?I have a large hutch with 2 sections, one the left section I have fleece blankets, and a cosy sack, and on the right section which is the largest part of the hutch,I entirely cover it with Hay.
what do you use?

fleece is definitely suitable for guineas :P

its definitely way better than wood shavings. My piggie was always sneezing until i changed to fleece.

hay is fine, great infact. just bit expensive to cover the whole cage with.
and i always worry they will hurt their eyes if everything is in hay. Hay is their food really, not bedding. But if yours like it and you can afford so much hay then thats great :)

I assume your piggies live outside as you said they live in a hutch? hope they are warm in there, weather been terrible lately.

Hi.I don't use Hay as bedding, sorry if that is how my post came accross,I use fleece in my piggies "bed section" of the hutch,my hutch has 2 seperate compartments.I use the larger side for Hay,and his food tray etc etc.Hay is bedding as well as food :),an I only use a certain type.My piggie loves his Hay,allthough as its a feed aswell,he eats alot of it.He loves to dive bomb the large section of the hutch too,he runs and jumps into the Hay,it is so cute to watch...I also hide his veggies and mix in there aswell, then watch him search for it :)

I find different things work for different people. My piggies hate having hay or sawdust under their feet. Also as they are inside its much easier to keep them clean on fleece. :) HTH

I use it all - I have a large herd that have 3 different areas one is hay and newspaper, one shavings and one fleece and fleecy beds.

In another cage I have incontenance pads up one end and hay and newspaper the other.

Then my skinnies have all fleecy except for 2 litter trays of hay and newspaper.

I have a C&C minus the girds now because they got in the way, so really I have them in a correx cage :(|). It is a 5 by 3 in grid terms. I have them on fleece with 2 litter boxes full of hay and newspaper with a rack next to one so the nicer hay they prefer eating is kept clean. I used to have a second level, just a 1 by 2 but I got incredibly annoyed with how badly constructed it was having made it in such a rush (I was way to exited lol), which was just hay and newspaper and was great, so they had fleece on the bottom floor and hay up top. Hoping to remake the second level soon when I have more time (though make it properly this time) and have the hay loft again :).

I have 4 pigs in a double 5x2ft hutch(2 pigs on each floor) I have lined the hutch with Lino and newspaper. I have hay in the bed area and large flaked shavings in the other. Then I have another 2 pigs in a separate hutch but Their lodgers for the winter. then all the hutches are in the summer house.

Hi

I have a bit of a mixture! In the warm summer months my two boars were outside in a double hutch. I used a thick layer of newspaper and then ecopetbed (small cardboard squares) with a layer of hay. Great for outside, warm, absorbant and just all swept out into the compost bin.

They are now in a C&C cage - if you go to housing you will be able to see loads of pictures of these. They have a large base with a ramp to a hayloft. The bottom is lined with a fleece cage liner and the top where they eat has a litter tray with megazorb in.

They tend to wee and poo where they eat the the tray with megazorb just soaks it all up and I change it every morning.

I was so sceptical about using fleece - it was going to smell, it would be wet, hard to clean etc. WRONG! my cage liner is a waterproof mattress liner sewn to fleece and the whole thing fits over the correx tray. I sweep up poo every day and then once a week I give it a good shake in the bin and pop it in the wash. It is just so easy, less mess than shavings etc and my piggies seem to like it (although they spend 90% of their time upstairs devouring hay!).

4piggypigs makes cage liners and they are really good. I have also made one of my own . I havent used fleece in the hutch but you may want to try to put something absorbant under the hay as it will stop the hay getting so wet and wet bedding can make your piggies cold.

HTH

I have a 6ft x 2ft double hutch and a 150 cage in my heated insulated shed. I use shavings (the horse kind) and loads if hay (also the horse kind) hay isn't expensive if you can buy it in big bales which I can and I store it where I keep my horse and bring bags home every few days :) same with the shavings, I put 2 thirds of the bale in my horses stable and bring the rest home for the pigs and buns.

I've tried fleece but didn't like it, I too used to shavings from having the horses lol and if you layer hay on it the top is always dry :)

I'm fascinated by c&c cages, I used to have the pigs in the house in the winter (before I had my baby) and the first year I had them in runs on the floor which was ace but now we don't have the room and a new carpet :-/ xx

My four girls are in a 6 x 2 hutch. In the sleeping area they have newspaper with mountains of hay on the top. In the living area they have newspaper followed by woodshavings followed by a layer of hay. They also have fleece beds and hammocks. It works well for me and the pigs

My girls are in an outside hutch. They have layers of newspapers, Aubiose which I really like, then hay in the sleeping bit. In the play bits they have newpaper, woodshavings, and redigrass. They have herbage in a hayrack. They have a padded cover that goes over the sleeping compartment and perspex covers for the fronts. My hutch is made up of a 4ft x 2ft hutch and a 3ft x 2ft hutch, connected with a plastic tube. They also have several cardboard tubes to play in. I have a snuggle safe for really cold nights, that I have only used twice this year and an igloo that I fill with hay, herbage and redigrass for not so cold nights.
