I have two very verbal but very different piggies, and am wondering how common that is. Our dominant boar Squishie has all sorts of loud squeaks, chirps, and wheeks. He can be VERY loud, but it is usually warbling or high pitched. Fizzgig seemed quiet, until we realized he makes all sorts of sounds, they are just a lot of low pitched grunting “uh uh uh uh uh”. It is quiet but once you notice it the sound carries well because it’s so low pitched. How do your piggies sound?

The two I have now are not very vocal apart from the 'this is new' chuntering that goes on when they have fresh hay. They show their excitement by running about and jumping, rather than squeaking.
I've had chirping pigs before now, and shriekers, so these two are quiet as mice in comparison.

One of mine will wheek quietly once food is served and us humans have moved out of the way, the other hardly makes any noise although both will run around their cage like crazy!

Lap time is very different and I'm so glad the piggy sounds has been raised. My quiet wheeking piggy when being stroked will make a low wheek and purring noise. Sometimes her body will be stretched out, then hunched a little while she vibrates. We find it all very confusing but take the wheeks/purring to be a good sign? 🤷‍♀️ The other makes no sound at all when being stroked so we don't push it.

I told my husband I’m not sure if Squishie is happy or not when he makes a lot of noise while being held! Sometimes he sounds happy, sometimes he sounds kind of irritated. And Fizzgig is either silent or goes “uh uh uh uh uh uh“ in his hilariously cute low grunts. But with both of them, they are very polite and let us know when they want to be put back by nibbling our shirt collars. i can’t decipher most of their sounds but they are very clear about that! :D

Mine are all quite vocal.
Micah, the husboar has been practising and has now mastered the very loud wheek.
He is incapable of being quiet and will chatter away to any pig or human who will listen.
He also has a very loud and deep rumble to remind the girls that he is a very handsome and lovely boar.

I popped into Pets at Home recently and saw a sign saying that guinea pigs make 13 distinct sounds..
Mine must be multi-lingual as they produce more than 13 different sounds.
