Ok, have just remembered that I have a couple of spare bits of fleece that I can try out in the cavy cage. I have got some old baby towels that I could put underneath them, or would newspaper be better?

I used towels uinder the fleece & they love it

That sounds lovely and comfy! How often do you have to wash the towels and fleece?

I use lots of newspaper, a couple of layers and towels and fleece, I change it every 5-7 days and it's fine, never get's smelly 
I spot clean daily and clean out the litter tray (where suprising a lot of the poops and pees are, probably because that's where the food is too though ) every couple of days.
